The Imperial Bursary is available to MBBS (A100) students for each year of their six year programme. There was a positive change in our policy in 2021 which made this possible from the 2021-22 academic year for all commencing and continuing MBBS (A100) students to be awarded full bursaries (where otherwise eligible) in years 5 and 6 from September 2021 onwards.

However, we recognise that in years 5 and 6, students have significantly reduced statutory funding from the NHS and the SLC for covering the Cost of living in London.  To minimise this impact in the final two years of study, MBBS students who are in a receipt of an Imperial Bursary can choose to either receive their funding awarded in full in each of the six years of study in full, or put aside some (33%) of their bursary payments awarded in years 1-4, to receive on top of any bursary awarded in years 5 and 6.

The standard payment option

The 6 year full award (depending on the household income assessment each year) option is the default Imperial Bursary payment option.  Students will receive their full bursary each year paid in equal instalments.

Further information is available on our Imperial Bursary page.

The 6 Year spread payment option

The 6 year option of the Imperial Bursary is available only to 6 year MBBS (A100) students who wish to receive more of their bursary payments in years 5 and 6, taken from years 1-4.  Between years 1 and 4 we will put aside 33% of your Imperial Bursary each year.  We will then pay half of your saved Imperial Bursary in years 5 and 6 respectively.  This will be paid in addition to any bursary awarded in years 5 and 6. You will accrue 1% interest on any saved bursary in years 1-5 and be paid to you in your final year.

Bursary payments will be paid in 8 instalments from November until June in year 1. In subsequent years your bursary will be paid in 9 instalments from October to June. In years 5 and 6, we will plan your payments from August to June.
