Why choose Earth Sciences at Imperial?
From the seas to the stars, from the Earth’s core to its changing climate, if it’s under the Sun – or revolves around it – we want to understand how it was formed, how it behaves and what its future holds.
You’ll join a close-knit community in the Department of Earth Science and Engineering. We’re based in the Royal School of Mines – a historic building on the outside with futuristic facilities inside.
Our location in South Kensington also gives us easy access to one of the finest fossil and mineral collections in the world at the neighbouring Natural History Museum. Museum staff, who are experts in geochemistry, mineralogy, planetary science, mineral resources and palaeontology, also contribute to our teaching.
You’ll receive expert teaching from our leading researchers and academics, and apply it on field trips across the UK and Europe, while forging friendships that will last a lifetime.
Where could your degree take you?
Earth Science is increasingly crucial in helping to tackle some of the world’s most significant challenges, so demand for our graduates is high.
Our three-year BSc degrees are excellent preparation for careers in geosciences and other professions, especially if followed by a relevant MSc and a research degree. Our four-year MSci degrees provide a deeper understanding of the subject and the chance to take on a significant research project.

You should apply to only one course within the department as there is no benefit to applying to multiple degrees. There is detailed information on transfers between courses on each page. Generally, you can transfer to another course within the department up to the start of the spring term in the first year.
If you are an international student, transferring to a different course could have an impact on your student visa. Please visit our International Student Support webpage for further information.
