Students in library

We’ve brought together a comprehensive network of academic support so that there will always be help on hand if you need it.

Departmental support

Your main source of academic support is your department.

Key people include:

  • Your Course Director or Academic Supervisor. They will be your primary point of guidance and support throughout your studies.
  • Postgraduate Tutor and Director of Postgraduate Studies. They are responsible for the overall running of your department’s postgraduate teaching and research.
  • Your Personal Tutor (for Master’s students on larger courses) or members of your research group (research students).

If your tutors cannot help, or you feel uncomfortable talking to them about certain issues, then they will be able to suggest whom you might talk to.

You will have the power to make real change to your academic experience through your elected course or department representative. This student will take your feedback and push for real changes on your behalf.

Subject librarians for your department can offer expert advice on finding resources for your subject area and help with using the Library’s collection of online journals and books.

English for international studentsLaughing students

The Centre for Academic English offers specialised support for Master's and PhD students whose first language is not English studying science, engineering and medicine.

There are courses at all levels and one-to-one consultations to respond to your language needs.

Pre-sessional English courses are available to offer holders who meet the College's English language entry requirements.
