Statistics for Public Health

Module Leader: Dr Alex Bottle

Cover four courses in key areas – statistical thinking, linear regression, logistic regression and survival analysis. In each course, you'll be introduced to key concepts and use a data set as a worked example. The emphasis is on learning through doing and discovery. You won't need any prior knowledge of statistics or R software.

Epidemiology for Public Health

Module Leader: Dr Filippos Filippidis

Explore measures of diseases frequency and measures of association, with a particular focus on attributable risk. The main principles of disease detection and screening are considered within the context of high risk and population strategies for prevention. The specialisation also covers the main study designs in epidemiological research.

Foundations of Public Health Practice

Module Leader: Dr Richard Pinder

Build a range of core public health knowledge, understanding and skills. You'll reflect on and cultivate behaviours required to become an effective public health professional. The specialisation is shaped into four courses covering the origins of public health, health improvement, behaviour change, and an integrative strand that develops your problem solving and professional skills.

Health Protection*

Module Leaders: Dr Christina Atchison and Dr Wendy Kwok

Develop your health protection knowledge through exposure to a simulated, real-time outbreak, to which you'll apply the skills learnt during the course. By the end of the specialisation, you'll be better equipped to critically appraise the operational and strategic response to a range of health protection threats.

Health Systems Development*

Module Leader: Dr Sondus Hassounah

Broaden your thinking of health systems and consider the importance of a horizontal approach to health system investment to achieve better health outcomes. You'll gain insight into a range of disciplines including organisational behaviour, health policy, information systems and human resources in order to strengthen your capacity to think as an effective health leader.

Population Health Improvement*

Module Leaders: Dr Anthony Laverty and Professor Christopher Millett

Learn the theoretical basis and practical applications of population health improvement, by exploring some of the key theoretical constructs in health promotion.  You'll analyse the social determinants of health and how these shape health behaviours, and the relative impacts of population versus individual level interventions. Using this knowledge, you'll examine effective strategies to address smoking and poor diet; two major drivers of the Non Communicable Disease (NCD) epidemic globally, including how to best engage with commercial actors to protect health.

Research Portfolio 1: The Study Question*

Module Leaders: Professor Paul Aylin and Dr Henock Taddese

Develop your own original research idea by reviewing existing knowledge to form a feasible research question. You'll learn to analyse relevant literature and how to describe the process of conducting a systematic review.

*This specialisation is a pre-requisite if you are progressing to the Master of Public Health. If you are not progressing, these can be taken as optional specialisations in addition to the list below.

Write a research protocol to develop your research question. You'll explore the philosophy of research inquiry and the approaches available to you, as well as qualitative and quantitative research methods.

Research Portfolio 3: Core Research Skills

Module Leaders: Professor Paul Aylin and Dr Henock Taddese

Engage with the principles of ethical and responsible research, while also learning about the practicalities of conducting research, including funding, resources, engagement, public involvement and co-production. You'll use this knowledge to add an ethics component, justification of resources and a strategy for public involvement to your research question and protocol.

Research Portfolio 4: Research in Practice

Module Leaders: Professor Paul Aylin and Dr Henock Taddese

Conduct your research in the field by collecting data and conducting a relevant analysis of it to answer your research question. You'll write up your results and findings.
