Overview
If you want to make the world healthier and safer for all, this flexible, part-time, online degree could be for you.
You’ll receive a comprehensive grounding in public health from leading experts who are shaping policy in this field.
You can take specialist modules, known as specialisations, in areas of your interest, exploring different approaches, systems and innovations to integrate into your own practice and research.
Throughout the course, you’ll have the opportunity to develop your quantitative analytical skills in public health, epidemiology and health services research.
The skills and knowledge taught on this course can be applied to a wide range of careers in public health practice, management or research at local, national and international levels.
Study programme
This course is made up of three awards - Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and Master of Public Health (MPH). You can apply to either the Postgraduate Certificate (taught over one year) or the MPH (offered over two or three years).
Upon successful completion of the Postgraduate Certificate, you can progress onto the Postgraduate Diploma and MPH.
Read more about how this works under 'Choosing a pathway' in the how to apply section.
Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert)
On the PG Cert, you'll gain an understanding of the basic foundations of public health through completing the core specialisations of Epidemiology for Public Health, and Foundations of Public Health Practice, Statistics for Public Health, and choose three electives, allowing you to specialise in areas of your own interest.
Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip)
The PG Dip allows you to build upon your knowledge and skills with further choice and specialised subjects within public health, directed towards your own public health practice and research. You will be required to complete six specialisations in areas of your interest.
Master of Public Health (MPH)
On the MPH, you'll build your research practice and skills further by completing four research specialisations. You will also be required to undertake 2 further elective choices. You will finish your research portfolio, where you will produce an academic paper and a video blog. You'll be supported throughout your project and benefit from a consistent level of supervision and structured learning.
Careers
Through this course you will develop a wide range of research skills, underpinned by knowledge of the most pressing global health issues.
As this is a new course, there have not yet been any graduates of the programme. However, the School of Public Health also offers an on-campus Master's degree in Public Health. Graduates of the on-campus course have gone into leadership roles in academia, government, industry and non-governmental organisations such as the Gates Foundation, the United Nations, and the World Health Organisation.
Is this degree accredited?
The core aims and outcomes of this degree adhere to the European standards laid out by the Agency for Public Health Education Accreditation.
Whilst this degree is not formally accredited by an agency or professional body, you'll benefit from an innovative and comprehensive public health curriculum, which responds to the most recent developments in public health, including our own research discoveries.
This sets us apart from courses in other countries such as the US and Canada, where accreditation requirements are not suitable for a UK-based programme.

Postgraduate Certificate
Core specialisations
You take all of the specialisations listed below.
Statistics for Public Health
Module Leader: Dr Alex Bottle
Cover four courses in key areas – statistical thinking, linear regression, logistic regression and survival analysis. In each course, you'll be introduced to key concepts and use a data set as a worked example. The emphasis is on learning through doing and discovery. You won't need any prior knowledge of statistics or R software.
Epidemiology for Public Health
Module Leader: Dr Filippos Filippidis

The main principles of disease detection and screening are considered within the context of high risk and population strategies for prevention. The specialisation also covers the main study designs in epidemiological research.
Foundations of Public Health Practice
Module Leader: Dr Richard Pinder
Build a range of core public health knowledge, understanding and skills. You'll reflect on and cultivate behaviours required to become an effective public health professional. The specialisation is shaped into four courses covering the origins of public health, health improvement, behaviour change, and an integrative strand that develops your problem solving and professional skills.
Optional specialisations
You will be able to choose two optional specialisations from the below.
- Global Diseases Masterclass
- Global Diseases Masterclass
- Global Health Challenges and Governance
- Health Systems Development
- Global Health Innovations
- Infectious Disease Modelling*
- Quality Improvement in Healthcare
- Participatory Approaches in Public Health
- Digital Health
- Advanced Statistics and Data Science

Health Protection*
Module Leaders: Dr Christina Atchison and Dr Wendy Kwok
Develop your health protection knowledge through exposure to a simulated, real-time outbreak, to which you'll apply the skills learnt during the course. By the end of the specialisation, you'll be better equipped to critically appraise the operational and strategic response to a range of health protection threats.
Health Systems Development*
Module Leader: Dr Sondus Hassounah
Broaden your thinking of health systems and consider the importance of a horizontal approach to health system investment to achieve better health outcomes. You'll gain insight into a range of disciplines including organisational behaviour, health policy, information systems and human resources in order to strengthen your capacity to think as an effective health leader.
Population Health Improvement*
Module Leaders: Dr Anthony Laverty and Professor Christopher Millett
Learn the theoretical basis and practical applications of population health improvement, by exploring some of the key theoretical constructs in health promotion. You'll analyse the social determinants of health and how these shape health behaviours, and the relative impacts of population versus individual level interventions. Using this knowledge, you'll examine effective strategies to address smoking and poor diet; two major drivers of the Non Communicable Disease (NCD) epidemic globally, including how to best engage with commercial actors to protect health.
Research Portfolio 1: The Study Question*
Module Leaders: Professor Paul Aylin and Dr Henock Taddese
Develop your own original research idea by reviewing existing knowledge to form a feasible research question. You'll learn to analyse relevant literature and how to describe the process of conducting a systematic review.
*This specialisation is a pre-requisite if you are progressing to the Master of Public Health. If you are not progressing, these can be taken as optional specialisations in addition to the list below.

How to apply
Important information for applicants fom Iran, Sudan, Crimea, Cuba, Syria and North Korea
Our Global Master of Public Health programme is delivered fully online via our platform partner, Coursera. United States export control regulations prevent Coursera from offering services and content to users in certain countries or regions. More information about which countries or regions are affected can be found on Coursera’s website.
Coursera must enforce these restrictions in order to remain in compliance with US law and, for that reason, we advise that all interested applicants check this information before applying to the programme. As a result, we are not able to consider applications for the programme for those who wish to study the programme from within these countries.
If any interested applicants have any queries regarding the above, please contact: gmph-queries@imperial.ac.uk
