This course is designed to engage and develop your understanding and increase your awareness of unconscious bias with some signposting and tips.
We may not be aware of our unconscious biases or their implications. If we can become aware, we can learn to adapt our behaviours and improve decision making processes to enhance our performance as well as that of a team or an institution.
We use the Advance HE definition of Unconscious Bias and general examples and activities to appreciate that unconscious bias happens all the time in every place of life. The live session builds on your preparatory work, with discussion and sharing of perspectives to support you to reflect and relate activities to our individual lives and create future plans to take forward.
Course Information
This course includes preparatory activities (~70 minutes) that you need to complete before the live session (120 minutes). Participants are expected to fully engage with both parts, and they are a condition to gain credit for the course.
N.B. This course does not cover machine learning.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this blended course and using the pre- and post-course materials, you will be better able to:
- Recognise that we all make quick judgements and assessments of people and situations.
- Identify how attributions, associations and biases may affect your performance, behaviour and decision-making.
- Recognise our individual biases.
- Explore the next step to manage individual biases.
