Overview of building work

  • Work will commence 8 March 2021 and will last approximately 7 months.
  • Work will only take place on weekdays 09.30-16.30
  • The work involves the removal of exterior panels, replacement of insulation and installation of the new façade

Woodward Buildings has some areas of cladding made from an Aluminium Composite Material (ACM). Ealing Council has issued a notice of improvement outlining the works required. The building has been declared safe for occupancy, but we will be replacing the cladding on parts of the building and undertaking associated works required to ensure the highest standards of fire safety.

Whilst we will work to ensure the impacts are minimised, residents should anticipate that there will be some level of disruption for parts of the year, including part of the Autumn Term for the 2021/22 academic year.

Updates

Week commencing 10.05.21

  • Block D - All mast climbers now installed so no more drilling/noisy works. Cladding insulation works to start levels 13 to 18.
  • Block C - Mast climber installs will start next week so drilling and noise will be intermittent daily. Scaffolding also to block C.

What this means for me

We have worked with our contractors to develop a schedule where inconvenience is minimised to the fullest possible extent, and we intend to keep you all updated throughout the process. Whilst we intend to keep you informed of any works that will impact you directly, please understand that there may be some unexpected disruptions that we can’t give you advance notice of.

You should expect most noise to occur when the cladding is being replaced in the vicinity of your room. When work is scheduled for your floor, we will notify you individually prior. All the work is taking place externally, so on days where work is scheduled close to your room, you may want to consider closing your curtains to ensure your privacy.

Aside from that, you can expect moderate levels of disruption from the mast climbers going past your window, as well as some noise from works taking place in other locations. There may also be times when you will be required to use alternative entrances.

Study spaces

Whilst the “Stay at Home” message is still a key part of the UK’s COVID-19 guidance, you are permitted to leave your accommodation for educational purposes. Our libraries and study spaces are open at the South Kensington and White City campuses should you prefer to work on campus. A number of facilities have also been converted into break-out spaces for your use.

We have secured space at the Invention Room cafe and meeting room just 10 minutes away in White City that can be used as silent study space exclusively for Woodward residents weekdays between 09.30-16.30. The Invention Rooms are just a 2-minute walk from White City Underground Station (Central line). Turn right when leaving the station and the cafe will be on your right. View location on a map
