Building works and fire safety
Residents should anticipate levels of disruption due to building works throughout 2021. This includes part of the Autumn Term for the 2021/22 academic year.
Update: Woodward Buildings has some areas of cladding made from an Aluminium Composite Material (ACM). Ealing Council has issued a notice of improvement outlining the works required. The building has been declared safe for occupancy, but we will be replacing the cladding on parts of the building and undertaking associated works required across 2020/21 to ensure the highest standards of fire safety.
The following fire safety strategy is in place at Woodward to protect occupants in the event of fire:
- Sprinklers in each bedroom, hallway and communal kitchen, which are automatically activated when fire is detected.
- Automatic fire detection in each bedroom and throughout the building as a whole.
- Fire alarms that have backup power supplies and are maintained by specialist engineers.
- Manual alarm buttons in every lobby of the accommodation floors – these can be triggered by anyone who may discover an outbreak of fire before it is automatically detected. They can also be used by staff or the fire service to escalate evacuation if required.
- Staff on-site 24/7 who are trained in how to respond in the event of fire alarm activation.
- Fire drills carried out to check that our fire evacuation processes are effective.
- Regular checks and audits of the building carried out, working closely with the London Fire Brigade.
