Inclusivity Statement
We value diversity
At Imperial we are about building a community where people of all sexual orientations and gender identities feel heard, affirmed, valued and respected.
As a service we are committed to engaging with ongoing training and reflective practice to support us to understand our student’s experiences, including the impact that discrimination has on their mental health and wellbeing. You will be accepted without exception; we want to support and empower you. Imperial Student Counselling and Mental Health Advice Service is fully equitable and inclusive of all identities, and people of all a/sexual orientations and a/gender identities feeling they belong and are valued and respected. We seek to affirm and help students explore their many identities, including a/sexuality, a/gender, race, ability, religion, and class.
LGBTQ+
We appreciate that despite the University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, discrimination still exists, and this can create barriers to learning and difficulties in University life. The NUS LGBTQ+ report, Education beyond the Straight and Narrow, found that 42% of LGBTQ+ respondents to a survey reported having experienced depression or anxiety, compared to 29% of non-LGBTQ+ respondents. University is a time that students are vulnerable to experiencing difficulties with their mental health and wellbeing and we acknowledge the added challenges for our students within the LGBTQ+ community.
The LGBTQ+ staff and post graduate network, Imperial 600, IQ, and the undergraduate student LGBTQ+ society, play a vital role in addressing the barriers and issues faced. The staff in the Student Counselling and Mental Health Advice Service also acknowledge our role in supporting LGBTQ+ students. We aim to create a welcoming inclusive environment where all students can feel safe and fully able to be themselves.
Imperial is part of Stonewall's Diversity Champions Programme and has signed Stonewall's Trans Rights are Human Rights public statement, to express support for our trans staff, students, alumni and the wider trans community. Further details can be found HERE.

N.B We use the phrasing ‘a/sexuality’ and ‘a/gender’ to acknowledge that sexual and gender diversity includes people who identify as asexual and agender, as well as those who identify with.
