Technicians' Portal
A diverse technical workforce
Our highly skilled technicians play a vital role in delivering the College's world-class research and teaching activities. We employ over 650 technicians, who manufacture all manner of bespoke equipment and parts for use in experiments. This can include casings for spacecraft destined for far-flung regions of the solar system; rigs to test how prosthetic limbs respond to forces; precision micrometre parts for laser experiments; and even outreach exhibits that tour science festivals and events around the country.
In May 2017, Imperial became one of the over 35 universities and research institutions from across the UK to have backed the pledge to support their technicians by becoming a founder signatory of the Technician Commitment. Six years on, more than 110 institutions have signed up. Imperial has also been awarded Science Council Employer Champion status, in recognition of the work we are doing to support our technicians to apply for professional registration.
'I am very pleased that Imperial is a leader in supporting the Technician Commitment to foster career development and professional recognition of our technicians. Imperial's technical staff are a vital part of our community, playing a central role in delivering our mission of research, education, and engagement. The Commitment recognises the value this group brings to the College, and their importance to our success.'
