Who should attend?

Please note that this workshop was called 'Introduction to assessment for learning' prior to the 2019-20 academic year.

This workshop is for staff who teach and assess students through tests, quizzes, coursework that carry a grade (summatively) but also assess them on a day to day basis without any grade consequences (formatively). In particular, this workshop is for staff who are new to teaching, and for those who want to review their existing ways of assessing students and build up a repertoire of assessment strategies to facilitate active learning.

The session presents and discusses a range of issues related to assessing students: the role of assessment in active learning, the characteristics of good assessment, methods of assessing students and assessment innovation.

This workshop is intended to complement the A practical guide to Designing effective assessment questions and marking rubrics and A practical guide to giving effective feedback workshops. These assessment-related workshops are meant to be complementary; attending all of them is not compulsory but is worthwhile if you are involved in both formative and summative assessment.

NB This workshop has considerable overlap with Introduction to feedback and formative assessment in the Faculty of Medicine which is specifically designed for those working in the Faculty of Medicine. Duplicating attendance at these workshops is likely to be unrewarding.
