Culture Committee

The Department of Life Sciences Culture Committee is a consortium of four quite different members of the department who put themselves forward to make the department a fantastic place to work. Their remit extends from catalysing social events, facilitating collaboration and equipment sharing, to streamlining workload. Great science and teaching are driven by people. I'm interested in working in an empowering, nurturing, and safe environment that makes the most of the great people we have. Within the department (and beyond) I'm keen to develop connection and community; a sense of safety and autonomy; a feeling of ownership and mastery of a field (be it in science, teaching, or administration); opportunities to grow and develop; options to contribute to society; and preventing overwhelming workloads.

The Culture committee is dedicated to strengthening our department community for the benefit of everyone, and something I’m proud to be involved in. For me, Culture should be a recognizable thread running through the fabric of a community – engendered by support and genuine interest in one another’s successes, failures, and health. The resulting work environment naturally encourages the best kind of science – open, collegial, collaborative and creative, with all community members recognized and valued, and all voices heard.

I’m a Teaching Fellow. Building a positive and welcoming culture makes a huge difference to a workplace and to peoples’ jobs and I’m excited about what lies ahead for the Department of Life Sciences. I am particularly interested in ensuring we foster connections between staff and students from all corners of the department, across demographics, campuses and job families.
