What is the Student Services Centre?

All the courses provided by the Chemistry Department are constantly evolving.

Constant sources of ideas for improvement come from student feedback - particularly via the Student Staff Committee and from the student feedback in SOLE.

Induction Procedures

During the 1st few weeks of a Degree Programme, both the College and Department put on detailed induction programmes.

Many resources are made available by the Department and College to students during the first few weeks of a degree programme.

ChemSoc and the Buddy Scheme

All incoming first year Chemists are automatically enrolled into ChemSoc, the Imperial College Chemistry Society. ChemSoc is run by a student committee and hosts many departmental social and career events throughout the academic year.

Starting at University may be daunting for many, therefore ChemSoc has a buddy scheme - otherwise known as the 'Mums and Dads' scheme. All incoming first years are assigned into small groups (Chemistry siblings) and each group is allocated to two older students (Chemistry mum and dad) in the first week of term.

The aim of the buddy scheme is to help the new students settle in where the older students can offer advice, experiences and support.

Academic Integrity and Plagiarism

The Chemistry programmes at Imperial are generally very intensive. You will encounter a wide range of assessment methods including traditional closed book examinations and marked laboratory/coursework. Many of these assessments are summative which means that they count towards your final result - i.e. they are designed to measure your achievement.

The concept of academic integrity is fundamental to your student experience at Imperial, particularly your conduct relating to summative assessments, so as to ensure that your academic achievements are a true reflection of your abilities.

Additionally, the Department and College take plagiarism very seriously. The Chemistry Department has a Departmental Plagiarism Policy Document. This policy incorporates a specific series of examples of how to correctly cite sources within an original piece of work (Addendum 3).
