Laboratory classes (including theoretical and mathematical methods laboratories, workshops and IT laboratories) are a key part of our student’s experience.

The aim of these laboratory classes is to develop your practical skills, gain confidence in numerous experimental techniques as well as analytical skills.

Laboratory classes are held in the afternoons of every weekday apart from Wednesday and are scheduled between 11.00am until 5.30pm depending on your year and lab groupings. Academic staff and postgraduate demonstrators are always present during these teaching lab classes.

Chemistry lectures and problem classes are typically scheduled in the mornings between 9am and 12pm and are held in the Pippard Lecture Theatre (Sherfield Building) or in the RSC1 building.

Lectures for ancillary subjects may be held elsewhere and may be scheduled by other departments, particularly for languages/humanities.

Lecture notes and course material for almost all individual Chemistry and Ancillary modules are provided to Students via the College's comprehensive Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Blackboard. Access is restricted to Imperial College Staff and Students.

Written exams are held in January and either May or June each year. For each question the 1^st marker provides a paragraph summarising the cohort’s performance on that question. This is uploaded to Blackboard as soon as the provisional grades are posted similarly. Additionally, for each exam paper an example of an excellent answer is also posted on Blackboard to show how an excellent answer would be constructed. 

The Registry is responsible for processing and releasing formal exam results. These final number grades are usually released after the end of the academic year in July. Your exam results can then be viewed on Student e-Service.
