Application process

After reading through this application guidance, please complete the online application form. To find the correct programme for your application, select 'Medical Research Council' in the application category.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 23:59 (UK Time) on 16 Nov 2022, with notification of the application outcome by January 2023.  Please also note that the last date for receipt of references in support of your application is 23 Nov 2022.

Before you begin:

  • Ensure you request a transcript from your university. This can sometimes take up to 28 days.
  • Prepare your personal statement and have access to details of your qualifications and achievements.

Applying for the President’s PhD Scholarship on the same application form

If you wish to apply for the President's PhD Scholarship as well, while this can be done as a second choice on the same application form, for ease you are advised to complete a separate application form. The MultiSci application form includes questions specific to the MultiSci Studentship.

Personal statement

The application form will ask you to provide a personal statement or a research project. For the MultiSci DTP we require that you provide a personal statement. A PhD project list will be provided in the first year of the studentship and are not expected to be selected at this stage.

The personal statement should be 500-800 words in length and should include the following:

  • Why you are applying for the MultiSci Studentship
  • The area of research you wish to focus on
  • Why you believe that research in this area is important 

Research themes

The research themes, as listed below, are broad and encompass an extensive and wide range of research areas. Within the online form, you will be asked to rank these areas in order of your preference and provide three key phrases. The purpose of the key phrases is to further define your research interests. We have provided examples of key phrases in the FAQs section.

  • The battle against infections
  • Understanding disease mechanisms in humans
  • Realising the power of big data to improve health

Requirements of the online application form

Your nationality/visa status
Since there are nationality/residence eligibility criteria associated with the studentship, we will ask for your nationality and residence status. Please see the eligibility criteria for more information about residence eligibility.

The contact details for two academic referees
Referees will be approached at the application stage. The deadline for receipt of references is 23 Nov 2022. If you have substantial research experience within an employment setting then one of your referees can be an employer who can attest to your research skills, but the other referee must be academic.

Education history with grades, or predicted grades for studies which are still in progress
If predicted grades are not available for undergraduate degrees then overall grades for years one and two of the course can be provided instead. For information on submitting evidence of qualifications, please see the College's apply for a research programme page.  

Research experience 
Where relevant, please provide a summary of skills and techniques used.
