The NIHR North West London Patient Safety Research Collaboration (PSRC) is a centre of excellence within the Institute of Global Health Innovation, and part of the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR).  It is a partnership between Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Imperial College London, with researchers from a specialised set of research groups working together to improve patient safety and the quality of healthcare services.

AIMS

 Our PSRC vision for the next five years is to improve the safety of both patients and healthcare workers by:

1. Reducing inequalities in safety outcomes among different patient and staff groups;
2. Tackling unresolved challenges in patient safety (differences in provider and patient behaviours, increasing complexity and severity of patient presentations);
3. Addressing the challenges and lessons of the pandemic (longer waiting lists, transitioning to new models of care);
4. Harnessing transformative technologies to improve care, while addressing its current limitations.

 

We work with local, national and international partners to support the wider dissemination and implementation of patient safety improvements and interventions, as well as be responsive to emerging patient safety priorities.

STRATEGY

Our strategy is to develop patient safety in the NHS and internationally through engagement with patients and the public, clinical partners, healthcare organisations, industry and government. We use our funding to deliver sustainable long-term, high impact programmes of research in patient safety. We do this by carrying out research in our unique areas of academic strength in:

• Patient and healthcare worker behaviours
• Medication safety
• Integrated care datasets
• Service delivery models.

Funding sources

The NIHR funds, enables and delivers world-leading health and social care research that improves people's health and wellbeing and promotes economic growth.

NIHR PSRCs are NHS/university partnerships in England that undertake high quality translational, applied and health services research on patient safety that addresses strategic patient safety challenges within the health and care system. The PSRCs aim to develop, validate and test innovations, approaches and interventions that have the potential to lead to improvements in patient safety and the safety of health and care services. To support translation into practice, NHS/university partnerships consider the eventual setting where new interventions, innovations, approaches will be delivered and the wide range of services (including primary, secondary, tertiary, mental health and social care), settings, pathways, patients and service users. A key emphasis underpinning all research themes is the reduction in inequalities in the safety of healthcare.
