Applying for a Clinical Teaching Fellowship

Clinical teaching fellowships are formal, substantive out-of-programme posts that doctors can undertake to develop their interest in education. Fellowships are usually for 12 months and run from August – August. At Imperial College London, these are broadly divided into:

  • Clinical Education Fellows (CEFs) – these are usually employed directly by Imperial College London (rather than an affiliated NHS Trust). They are usually based at Charing Cross and/or South Kensington Campus. Depending on the role, they might work in medical education research, curriculum development, assessment and/or in the delivery of other central teaching courses.
  • Clinical Teaching Fellows (CTFs) – these are employed by NHS Trusts affiliated with Imperial College (rather than Imperial College itself) but are eligible to apply for an Associate Clinical Teaching title with Imperial College. As they are based at a hospital site, their work centres around medical students on clinical placement. Sites include:
    • Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (St Peter’s Hospital)
    • Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (Harrow, Brent, Hillingdon, Kensington, Chelsea and Westminster Mental Health Services)
    • Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, West Middlesex Hospital)
    • Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (Charing Cross Hospital, Hammersmith Hospital, Queen Charlotte’s Hospital and St Mary’s Hospital)
    • London North West Healthcare NHS Trust (Ealing Hospital and Northwick Park Hospital)
    • The Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Hillingdon Hospital)

Fellowships may be advertised via:

Both CEF and CTF roles are usually advertised between February and May of each year. We strongly recommend setting up a jobs alert for the above websites using search terms “education” “teaching” so opportunities are not missed.

Imperial College London is extremely supportive of the professional development of its staff. There are multiple opportunities to broaden your educational experience and develop your portfolio whilst working as a fellow, including but not limited to:

  • Teaching in centrally-delivered courses throughout the MBBS course.
  • Involvement in assessment.
  • Involvement in curriculum or course design.
  • Involvement in educational research.

Read the job description and person specification which are listed as part of the job advertisement to find out specific information for each role. The job description will detail whether the fellowship is full time non-clinical or a split between clinical and educational work. If you have any further questions about the role, consider contacting your prospective employer.
