The Medical Education Research Unit (MERU) conducts innovative medical education research to inform, enhance and evaluate medical education across the sector. The MERU teamcan provide consultancy in a wide range of areas including clinical innovation and delivery, technology enhanced learning, humanities in medical education and equality and inclusion in curriculum and assessment. Internally, MERU supports the School of Medicine by ensuring its educational practices are evidence-based and by evaluating and researching its curriculum. It also provides Imperial staff and students with advice on project planning and applications for ethical approval. 

MERU’s core aims are to:

  • Raise the external profile of the School through high impact research in medical education.
  • Inform, enhance and evaluate the educational activities of the School, thereby improving the student experience.
  • Support the educational development of educators and students through provision of advice and events.

Professor Susan Smith

Sue is the Founding Director of the Medical Education Research Unit, providing its direction and leadership. Her research interests include enhancing equality, diversity and inclusivity in medical careers, particular in selection and assessment.

 Dr Kay Leedham-Green  

Dr Kathleen Leedham-Green

Kay’s research interests are broad and include education for sustainable healthcare, innovation, quality improvement and preparedness for practice. Kay created and leads MERU’s AoME-accredited professional educational development for Clinical Teaching Fellows.

 Dr Ana Madeira Teixeira Baptista  

Dr Ana Madeira Teixeira Baptista 

Ana is Strategic Lead for Medical Education Transformation leading on curriculum evaluation and examining its impact on the development of professional identity. She provides professional development opportunities for teaching fellows through autoethnography. 

 Giskin Day  

Giskin leads the intercalated BSc in Humanities, Philosophy and Law. Her expertise is in the contribution of the humanities to medical education and she is currently undertaking her PhD on expression and reception of gratitude in healthcare. 

 Roxy Hughes  

Roxy Hughes 

Roxy provides MERU with administrative support. Roxy is the first point of contact for new MERU members, and anyone seeking advice with education research.
