At this stage you do not need to apply to the MRes in Biomedical Research. If you are not successful in obtaining a place on the 1+3 PhD programme you will be able to apply for the 1-year MRes course afterwards if you wish.

At this stage you do not need to make a formal application for a PhD. Successful candidates will be sent full details on how to enrol on the course.

Whilst we would encourage candidates to consider areas of research that are of interest to them, candidates should not contact supervisors at this stage. The structure of the 4-year programme allows students to undertake two research projects in different groups during the first year and hence make an informed decision on their PhD project at the end of the first year.

No, candidates are not required to submit a project proposal. The one-page statement should indicate your motivation and interest in undertaking the 4-year PhD programme.

Due to the high volume of applications received each year, we are unable to accommodate individual visits or put candidates in touch with current students. Short-listed candidates are normally invited in-person for interview, however due to COVID-19 interviews are likely to be held via Zoom.

No, this is an integrated 4-year programme and the first year MRes course is therefore a compulsory component. Whilst some students join straight from an undergraduate degree, the majority have already completed taught Masters courses.

Due to the highly competitive nature of our programme, all candidates should meet or expect to achieve the minimum entry criteria (1st class or upper 2:1 first degree or equivalent). All applications are reviewed and short-listed by a panel based on academic criteria. Since we receive a large volume of applications, we are unable to provide individual feedback to unsuccessful applicants.

We are able to fund students who are eligible for ‘home’ fees in Autumn 2021 or who come from a Lower Middle Income Country (LMIC) with the exception of China and India. In terms of residency requirements for UK nationals, for programmes starting from 1 August 2021, candidates will continue to be eligible for home fee status as long as:

• They were living in the EEA or Switzerland on 31 December 2020, and have lived in the EEA, Switzerland, the UK or Gibraltar for at least the last 3 years before starting a course in the UK
• Have lived continuously in the EEA, Switzerland, the UK or Gibraltar between 31 December 2020 and the start of the programme.

Those with pre-settled status will qualify as a home student for this studentship if they have 3 years residency in the UK/EEA/Gibraltar/Switzerland immediately before the start of their studentship.
