Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to apply to the MRes in Biomedical Research?

At this stage you do not need to apply to the MRes in Biomedical Research. If you are not successful in obtaining a place on the 1+3 PhD programme you will be able to apply for the 1-year MRes course afterwards if you wish.

Do I need to submit an application to Imperial College for a PhD?

At this stage you do not need to make a formal application for a PhD. Successful candidates will be sent full details on how to enrol on the course.

Do I need to identify a supervisor and/or project for my application?

Whilst we would encourage candidates to consider areas of research that are of interest to them, candidates should not contact supervisors at this stage. The structure of the 4-year programme allows students to undertake two research projects in different groups during the first year and hence make an informed decision on their PhD project at the end of the first year.

Do I need to include a project proposal with my application?

No, candidates are not required to submit a project proposal. The one-page statement should indicate your motivation and interest in undertaking the 4-year PhD programme.

Can I visit the department? Can I talk to current students?

Due to the high volume of applications received each year, we are unable to accommodate individual visits or put candidates in touch with current students. Short-listed candidates are normally invited in-person for interview, however due to COVID-19 interviews are likely to be held via Zoom.

I already have a Masters degree. Can I skip the first year of this programme?

No, this is an integrated 4-year programme and the first year MRes course is therefore a compulsory component. Whilst some students join straight from an undergraduate degree, the majority have already completed taught Masters courses.

Can you give me any advice as to what constitutes a successful application?

Due to the highly competitive nature of our programme, all candidates should meet or expect to achieve the minimum entry criteria (1st class or upper 2:1 first degree or equivalent). All applications are reviewed and short-listed by a panel based on academic criteria. Since we receive a large volume of applications, we are unable to provide individual feedback to unsuccessful applicants.

Am I eligible for the studentship funding

We are able to fund students who are eligible for ‘home’ fees in Autumn 2021 or who come from a Lower Middle Income Country (LMIC) with the exception of China and India. To find out if you are eligible for home fees, please see the fee status page and related links. To find out if you are eligible for an LMIC place, please check the list of countries here.

If you are not eligible for funding, applications for self-funded places on the MRes in Epidemiology, Evolution and Control of Infectious Diseases are welcomed. Please apply separately here

I am a UK National. How do I know if I meet the residence requirements for this studentship?
