Genetics & Genomics
Genetic and genomic sciences are already transforming modern medicine. It is hard to imagine a biomedical research area with more opportunities for rapid clinical translation."
Professor Jorge Ferrer
Head of Section
The Section of Genetics & Genomics aims to understand the genetic and epigenetic underpinnings of human disease. It leverages our ability to interrogate complete human genome sequences and epigenomic landscapes, together with the recent advent of genome engineering technologies that offer unprecedented opportunities to functionally dissect our genome. Our overarching goal is to develop preventive and curative personalised approaches based on an in-depth knowledge of the molecular defects that underlie patients’ disease processes.
The Section includes research teams with specific interests in Mendelian and common disorders including diabetes, obesity, and non-alcoholic fatty liver. It comprises the NIHR Imperial BRC Genomics Facility, whose mission is to support the use of genome technologies and information to facilitate medical advances. The Section also fosters training activities, a seminar series focused on genome sciences and an annual symposium.
