  • 24-48 months for students following full-time milestones

  • Degree in a related subject
  • Master's preferable, but not essential

Programme structure

  • Research plan at 2 months
  • Early stage assessment at 9 months (or 18 months if part-time)
  • Late stage assessment at 24 months (or 36 months if part-time)

Requirements

Referees
You must supply the names of two academic referees, academic, clinical or professional. A reference from the proposed supervisor is not acceptable unless he/she was involved in your Master's degree. References must be submitted by email from an institutional email account (no personal accounts such as Gmail or Hotmail). Alternatively, references may be sent by post - signed and on headed paper.

Transcripts
Students will be required to provide evidence of academic attainment, via official transcripts.

Funding
Students will require confirmation of funding for the entire period of registration. 

English proficiency
Evidence of English language proficiency is a requirement for all students. Please see the College web page English language requirements for further details.

Existing Imperial College staff
Members of College staff who are intending to register for a higher degree should make an appointment to see the Department's Research Degrees Manager, Hayley Kendall-Berry (h.kendall@imperial.ac.uk), as soon as they begin.

Offer of admission
Once accepted by the Department, Registry will make the student an offer of admission. Please see Requirements for Graduate Studies for further information.

There are five routes to applying for a PhD or MD (Res) within the Department

There are five routes to obtaining a PhD or MD (Res) within the Department

Go to the postgraduate how to apply page, and read through the guide on 'Applying for a postgraduate research (PhD) programme'. Then click on the postgraduate research application form. You will need to create an account - you will be prompted to enter your name and email address. You will then be sent an email that will allow you to create a password and login to our application site. 

If you’re applying for a full-time standard PhD or MD (Res), select ‘Postgraduate Research’ from the drop down menu. Then type the following in the ‘Find your programme’ free text box:

  1. For a PhD, enter 'Clinical Medicine Research (Medicine) – Full-Time A3Z1DM'
  2. For an MD (Res), enter 'Clinical Medicine Research (Medicine) MD (Res) – Full-Time A3P1DM'

Follow the instructions to complete your application.

The second category involves those students who might be described as truly part-time, attending the College between 40% and 80% full-time equivalent. Part-time students follow part-time milestones. The minimum registration period is 48 months for PhD and MD (Res). The maximum is 72 months.

If you’re applying for a part-time standard PhD or MD (Res), select ‘Postgraduate Research’ from the drop down menu. Then type the following in the ‘Find your programme’ free text box:

  1. For a PhD, enter 'Clinical Medicine Research (Medicine) – Part Time A3Z1DM'
  2. For an MD (Res), enter 'Clinical Medicine Research (Medicine) MD (Res) – Part Time A3P1DM'

Follow the instructions to complete your application.

The majority of part-time students are employed solely or principally to work on their research studies. This category usually includes Research Assistants and Clinical Research Fellows who should be devoting a minimum of 80% of their time to their research. These students are expected to follow full-time milestones and submit a thesis within four years. The minimum registration period is 33 months for PhD and 24 months for MD (Res). The maximum registration period is 48 months.

NHS staff register as part-time students. The College permits staff of Imperial College NHS Healthcare Trust to follow full-time milestones and register for a minimum of 33 months.

You will need to create an account - you will be prompted to enter your name and email address. Staff employed outside Imperial College and the NHS register as part-time students and follow part-time milestones. The minimum registration for both PhD and MD (Res) is 48 months and the maximum registration is 72 months.
