Paediatrics
The Section of Paediatrics encompasses four world-class research groups:
Allergy - The Paediatric Allergy Research Group led by Professor Adnan Custovic has a thriving research programme which integrates the excellence in clinical research and computationally-intensive data analysis with biological models and allergenic molecules. This provides a unique combination of translational research in asthma and food allergies, with the overall aim to build the scientific basis of clinical allergy.
Paediatric Infectious Diseases - The Paediatric Infectious Diseases Research Group at Imperial College London is an internationally recognised, leading research team focused on improving diagnosis, treatment and prevention of severe and life-threatening infections in children. The group has made major contributions to a number of severe childhood infections including meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia, childhood tuberculosis, severe malaria and Kawasaki disease.
Neonatal Medicine – The Neonatal Medicine Research Group's focus is the newborn infant. Current research at the Queen Charlotte’s campus involves developing novel magnetic resonance and electrophysiological biomarkers to quantify brain injury, and deploying these for evaluating perinatal neuroprotective therapies. Professor Neena Modi leads the Neonatal Research Group at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital campus, which incorporates the Neonatal Data Analysis Unit and UK National Neonatal Research Database. Her group’s research targets the impact of perinatal factors, such as mode of delivery, nutrition and neonatal care on life-long health and well-being, and the use of routinely recorded clinical data to facilitate research and improve neonatal care.
Child Public Health and Health Services Research - Headed by Dr Mitch Blair, the group is examining how health services in the UK and Europe can be optimised to improve children and young people’s health. Current research themes include the comparison and redesign of models of primary child health care in Europe; early years child public health preventive interventions; unscheduled care in pre-schoolers; and Vitamin D deficiency rickets surveillance.

Head of Paediatrics
Professor Andrew Bush is interested in the invasive and non-invasive measurement of airway inflammation in children, in particular, the use of endobronchial biopsy in the management of severe asthma, and also respiratory mass spectrometry.
