Research
The Department of Medicine is a world-leading centre of excellence in biomedical research. With a broad research portfolio and a research income of over £60m, the department is a large multi-disciplinary environment delivering innovative, cutting-edge basic and translational research benefitting patients worldwide. Working closely alongside the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and facilitated by the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre, our discovery research is quickly translated to advance patient healthcare for real life impact. Working alongside our partners worldwide, we drive international healthcare programmes, ensuring that we remain at the very forefront of global health research.
Our large research income is composed of awards from funding bodies across the landscape, including research councils, charities, NIHR, EU and industry. We are the only department nationally to hold 16 Wellcome Trust Investigator Awards since the scheme began in 2011 and we were awarded two NIHR Research Professorships. We currently lead three large EU Horizon 2020 Collaborative programmes (PERFORM, MOCHA, EAVI) and last year we were successful in receiving an MRC UK Dementia Platforms award and establishing an MRC Addiction Research Clinical Training programme (MARC). Our on-going commitment to support early career investigators and intermediate level researchers is reflected by many personal awards in the last year.
We are committed to promoting multi-disciplinary collaboration and harnessing strengths in strategic priority areas. In 2015, the department led for the college on the creation of the Antimicrobial Research Collaborative @ Imperial (ARC), a cross-college initiative with the aim of consolidating multidisciplinary strengths in antimicrobial research across the college to address the urgent global antimicrobial resistance crisis. This initiative was launched last year at a high profile event chaired by Dame Sally Davies.
