About us
The Department of Medicine is one of the largest teaching and research organisations in the UK, with a reputation for excellence and a vibrant and international working community.
We are committed to developing a strong academic community of staff and students working together to fulfil our Mission:
- to deliver outstanding medical research,
- to educate the next generation of leaders in medicine,
- to apply the benefits of discovery to improve public health and,
- to build a strong and supportive academic community
As demonstrated by the results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, we have a track-record of producing world-class research. The majority of the Department's activity was returned under the Clinical Medicine unit of assessment (UoA1) in the last HEFCE Research Excellence Framework (2014); Imperial was ranked 4th overall for UoA1 by Times Higher Education according to their 'grade point average (GPA)' measure of overall quality profiles. The Department has an average turnover of £110m per annum, and a research spend of £60m.
We are dedicated to ensuring that our staff and students prosper within an egalitarian working environment. As a result of this commitment, the Department of Medicine was awarded a Bronze departmental award in April 2013, followed by a Silver departmental award in April 2015. Please see our Athena SWAN and Working culture pages for more information on our application.
