Broaden your horizons with a fellowship abroad.
The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has issued their first call for their Short-Term Pre/Postdoctoral Research Fellowships.
Designed to expand academic exchange between nations, this programme enables researchers from the UK and Ireland to learn about the research and living environment in Japan. For the FY26 cycle, fellowships must start between Saturday 1 August 2026 and Wednesday 31 March 2027, with awards covering visits of 1-12 months.
Researchers from any field are encouraged to participate but they must be based ordinarily in the UK or Ireland. Both PhD students and postdoctoral graduates are eligible. However, students must be scheduled to receive their degrees within two years of starting their placement in Japan and postdoctoral candidates must have obtained their PhDs within the last six years.
Submissions for the JSPS fellowships should be sent via email to lon-short-termfellowship@overseas.jsps.go.jp. You can find more information on the documents needed to submit with your application in their Guidelines for Completing your Application [PDF]. If you would like to discuss any aspect of your submission, please do not hesitate to book an appointment with one of our careers consultants.
You will also need to provide two referees who are expected to email the aforementioned address with their references. You can find more information in their Notes for Referees [PDF].
All parts of your application must be submitted before 9.00 Monday 19 January 2026.
You can find the full details, necessary documents and FAQs on the FY26 Short Term Pre/Postdoctoral Research Fellowships website.
