Sustainability on Campus
About this Challenge Team
Our Challenge Team will continue working on projects started with last year’s team and launch new initiatives using the network they built. We aim to disseminate a carbon footprint calculator (CFC) and an associated impact assessment survey developed by the previous team to Imperial students. Through this, we will educate students and empower them to tackle their carbon-intensive habits, while gathering data to help Imperial target institutional-level sustainability efforts. We have identified the Imperial Accommodation Hub’s e-induction and the sustainability week as occasions to spread the CFC and survey. Before this, we will test the CFC and survey on a sample group from a College hall and a department to gather feedback. We will be using multiple methods to gather responses, including e-mails to targeted group, advertisements on college screens, and distributing flyers.
Additionally, we will be seeking new ways to use the results of the CFC and survey by identifying the bodies within Imperial which can best use them to act. For example, if results show that a specific department’s students purchase large amounts of electronics (laptops, tablets, etc.), the IT team could be contacted to identify opportunities for college laptops to be provided, or a targeted information campaign could be started for that specific department. We will also be using our contacts with the catering team to identify opportunities to reduce single-use plastics usage in on-campus food.
