As the world confronted the COVID-19 pandemic, Imperial College London played a leading role in the global effort to respond to the crisis. Imperial academics were and continue to be at the forefront of efforts to advise the public and policymakers, understand the disease, develop new vaccines and create new diagnostic tests. Many medicine faculty and students served on the front lines of the NHS here in the UK.

The Imperial College COVID-19 Response Fund was established to provide a means for donors to contribute to a pooled fund that will give the College the flexibility to quickly support high-impact projects in the university’s efforts to tackle COVID-19 as well as students impacted financially by the pandemic.  More than 900 people donated, together raising over £610,000 for research tackling the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes a generous donation of £200,000 from the Hinduja Foundation and Ashok Leyland, the largest gift to the COVID-19 Response Fund to date, which is in addition to an initial contribution of £1 million from the President’s Excellence Fund.

The fund had an impact  on the work of many of our researchers like Professor Molly Steven’s work on diagnostics, the JamVent team's emergency ventilator and important research into the long-term effects of COVID-19. You can learn more about the projects funded.
