Your professional online presence

All staff at Imperial are encouraged to make use of existing systems and products at the College in order to maximise their online presence.

Information is available below on Professional Web Pages (PWPs), the Symplectic Elements system and the Spiral institutional repository. These systems work together to support individual academics and research staff in recording, reporting and showcasing their academic activities and outputs. PWPs are also available to non-academic staff.

Using these systems is simple and free, and support is available from the team to help resolve any queries and issues.

Professional Web Pages (PWPs)

This personalised web resource enables you to showcase your work in a simple way. You can edit your own PWP, or delegate someone to do this for you. The editing interface is simple and is directly accessible from the live page via log in. Your contact information is drawn from the College Directory, and your Symplectic Elements account automatically updates your searchable publications listings and professional activity information.

Symplectic Elements

This is a key tool to help you record information on your publications, teaching, professional activities, equipment, grants and collaborations. The data in this system feeds into your PWP and internal data systems, and is the foundation of datasets used by the College for major exercises such as the HEFCE Research Excellence Framework. The system also works with Spiral to support staff with Open Access, and provides tools to help with updating ResearchFish.

Spiral Institutional Repository

This is Imperial's open access repository. Closely integrated with Symplectic, it facilitates 'green' self-archiving open access and is the institutional repository for 'gold' open access on publication articles for all College researchers. Staff should upload outputs 'on acceptance' and apply for OA funding (if required). Self-archived outputs are checked and embargoes applied, where appropriate. Compliance with the HEFCE Open Access policy is measured through Spiral.
