Exchange Student Modules
Exchange students accepted into the Department of Mechanical Engineering are permitted to take any module available to Mechanical Engineering students. This includes the full range of modules taught by the Department, as well as modules taught by other departments as part of the IDX scheme, and i-Explore modules. Students coming from RWTH Aachen University are also permitted to take certain modules from the Department of Chemical Engineering.
Capped modules
Some modules are extremely popular with Imperial students and Exchange students alike. These courses have limited places, and are referred to as ‘capped’ modules. Unfortunately, we cannot attempt to register exchange students onto modules until they have been enrolled onto the central student system, which can take a few weeks after you have accepted your offer from Imperial College, and means you may miss the registration deadline, particularly for i-Explore modules. We will try our best to enrol you onto as many of your chosen modules as possible, but you must be prepared to choose a different module if your original choice is a capped module that is already full.
Capped modules have been marked with a *.

IDX modules
Inter-Departmental Exchange (IDX) modules* are offered by various departments within Imperial College and has been designed for students from other departments to broaden their knowledge, and encourage inter-disciplinary collaboration. For more information, and to see the range of modules currently available, please check the website.
i-Explore modules
The i-Explore program offers students the chance to develop skills and knowledge which are outside the scope of their degree, but which may be useful in a broader context. Exchange students can choose modules from any of the categories below:
- Business for Professionals of Engineering and Science (BPES)* – modules focused on financial and business skills, helping you to see the real-world applications of your degree subject
- Horizons* – modules on a broad range of skills, from modern languages (beginner to advanced) to Politics, Philosophy and Creative Writing
- Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine (STEMM)* – modules covering topics not normally included in undergraduate programs, but which are being pioneered by our researchers, including Mars Settlement Design, Natural Resource Management, and Personalised Medicine
- Multidisciplinary Project* – this module allows you to collaborate with students in different departments on a group project, developing an idea or product
Module changes
Please note that the module choice available is subject to change from year to year.
