The interview will be 25- 30 minutes with a member of academic staff. During the interview we will try to assess your potential. We might ask you about things you have mentioned in your personal statement, and explore your ability to think like an engineer. We will want to know about your interest in engineering.

Interviews will be held online on Wednesday afternoons between November and March. We aim to give you at least two weeks notice if we select you for interview.

If your application passes initial screening we will invite you to take a 60 minute online admissions test. The admissions test is on two dates- one on Friday 04 November 2022 at 10:00 and one on Friday 10 February 2023 at 10:00. The invitation will be sent by email at least a week before the test. If it is not possible for you to take the test online at the given time, you will have the opportunity to let us know this, or for you to request any reasonable adjustments, by replying to the invitation email.

Most of the test will be based on high school maths and physics. The questions will require a numerical or multiple choice answer to be entered online. You can use a calculator and you will be required to upload a scan or photograph of your written workings shortly after you complete the test.

If we invite you to take the admissions test, we will also send instructions for a short readiness (practise) test (including how to submit the scan or photgraph) for you to familiarise yourself with the platform at your convenience a few days before the actual test.

Selection for interviews will be a holistic decision based on content of your UCAS application  and your test score. There is not a fixed weighting that we will apply to these two components, and it is not possible to give an indication of a cut-off score or average score of applicants invited for interview.

You are likely to hear the outcome of your application in March after all interviews have been completed.

Our minimum requirements are given below, but please note that due to the very high number of fantastic applicants we are not able to interview or make offers to every applicant who is predicted to meet these grades or who already has exceeded these grades.

If you feel that you are a very strong applicant for our course, but the qualifications you are taking do not meet any of the minimum requirements given below (for example if you are taking Maths and Physics A Level with a BTec or CTec), please email us on me.admissions@imperial.ac.uk to ask if we will consider your application.

If your predicted grades do not meet the minimum requirements given below, you may be eligible for a guaranteed interview under the college widening participation admissions scheme. For more information about this please see the admissions scheme webpages.

Conditional offers can be at a higher level than the minimum specified below – for example for an applicant taking three A levels the offer might be A*A*A* and for 4 it might be A*A*AA. The IB offer might be 40 overall with 7 in HL Maths and Physics. The level of the offer is determined by our judgement of the application as a whole.

You must also meet the standard Imperial College requirement in the appropriate English language qualification.

Yes, we do. Selection is based on consideration of academic ability, motivation for study, interest in the subject area and the potential both to benefit from the experience and contribute to College life while on the course.

Please be aware that most applicants are predicted to meet or exceed our minimum entry requirements, and demonstrate good motivation for studying mechanical engineering. Due to the high number of extremely competitive applications for a strictly limited number of interview places and offers, we are regrettably not able to interview or make an offer to every suitable applicant.
