Electronic and Information Engineering

Engineering is fun – it’s a marvel of the world, you can walk down the street and understand how a building is constructed, how your phone or a car works.  I chose engineering rather than physics or maths because you study these abstract subjects – and then you can also do something with them.

Imperial was the only university offering EIE  - which combines electrical engineering and computing.  It’s a  brilliant and unique course because we get to study the two fields.

From basic logic to operating systems, building and designing embedded systems, and understanding how the internet works – you get the whole range.  With EIE you learn about the software and hardware components – in a phone for example – so you could be employed working on any part of something half the world uses every day, which is wonderful.

This summer I’m hoping to have a placement with one of the research groups, here, working on intelligent systems in the Robotics Lab.

London is fun, so much going on, and so much to do.  Imperial is based in a really nice area, but with all the advantages of being in the centre of a city – you don't’ have to worry about getting from one place to another.

Jake’s advice

Imperial’s brilliant because it’s got a huge range of subsidized student-run clubs – sports, arts subjects, dance classes.  I’ve tried more than ten different clubs and it’s something I’d highly recommend.
