Visas
Once you have received your CAS from Imperial, you should be able to start the visa application process. If you need any help on the process, Imperial’s dedicated International Student Support team provide specialist immigration advice to prospective students, with particular expertise in Tier 4 (General) student visas and Short Term Student visas (formerly student visitor visas).
The International Student Support webpages contain lots of useful advice on making a student visa application.
ATAS
All non-EEA students who need a student visa to study in the UK will be required to apply for ATAS clearance before applying for a Tier 4 (General) student visa.
PLEASE NOTE that an ATAS certificate is only valid for 6 months from the date of issue. You must make sure that you submit your visa application before the ATAS expires!
You should apply for ATAS clearance well in advance (at least one month) of your student visa application as the processing time for ATAS can be as long as 20 working days.
NB: In addition to the above, during the months of July, August and September, ATAS is extremely busy and so the processing time for ATAS applications can be as long as 30 working days.
You will need to include a short description about the research work to be undertaken in your ATAS application. Please contact your supervisor for this. August is the main holiday month in the UK so if you are due to start in October we recommend that you contact your supervisor for the research statement before end July.
Registration
- You must register online before arriving on campus. Please watch this useful video about the online registration process.
Bursary payment set-up
Applies to any student awarded funding from a scholarship scheme managed by the department or College.
Students will only get paid after:
(i) conditions of offer have been met
(ii) offer officially accepted on the My Imperial.
(iii) bank details uploaded onto the on the ‘Student Funding’ tab on the My Imperial.
(iv) online registration has been fully completed
Bursary is paid on the 7th of each month.
If you have completed the full online registration and uploaded your bank details on the My Imperial, but your payment has not reached your bank account on the first Friday of October, please wait for the following Fridays. October is the only month in which bursary payments are scheduled every Friday.
Please be aware that it takes at least a couple of weeks to process the bursary payment request. It is advisable that you have your own means of support for the first 6 weeks of study in case of delays. The department Postgraduate Manager is your first point of contact for funding related matters.
UK bank accounts (preferred, standard method)
Payment of student bursaries are normally made only to UK bank accounts. Students are encouraged to open a bank account before arriving at Imperial College. Details of bank accounts should be submitted as soon as possible, using the secure student e-service web-portal, on the ‘Student Funding’ tab.
Overseas bank accounts (as an emergency measure for the first month)
We are aware that it is not easy or quick for newly-arrived overseas students to set up a UK bank account. Where possible, they should approach a branch of a UK bank in their own country, to see if arrangements can be made in advance of their arrival in the UK.
As a short-term measure, we can make payment directly to an overseas bank account subject to the following conditions:
(i) The account must belong to the student, or to a parent or friend whose identity and connection to the student can be verified;
(ii) Details of the account (name and address of bank; name and address of account holder; swift code, bank account number and/or IBAN) should be sent to the bursary office by email, not using the secure e-service portal described above for UK banking details. Emails should be sent from an Imperial College email address (not gmail, Hotmail or similar),
(iii) As soon as a UK bank account is opened, the student should provide details via the e-service portal, and also send another email to the bursaries office to tell them to discontinue overseas payments.
(iv) Payments to overseas bank accounts will take longer than to UK banks.
Please bear in mind that the amount you will be paid will vary due to exchange rates. This alternative option might also take considerably longer for the payment to reach the overseas bank account.
PhD student information
- The most important information for you to navigate through the department and progress into your study programme, can be found on the current student A – Z index.
- We encourage all students to make use of the invaluable help provided by the Centre for Academic English (CfAE). Non-native speakers of English language are required to contact the Centre for Academic English to either book the compulsory Doctoral Academic Communication Assessment (DACR1), or to apply for exemption.
- New students who wish to take paid work and Graduate Teaching Assistants, must book into the two initial sessions provided by the Graduate School (bookable through their webpage):
- Introduction to Learning and Teaching
- Introduction to Assessment and Feedback for Learning
Students with disabilities
The Disability Advisory Service offers confidential advice and support to students with a disability, specific learning difficulty, enduring health or mental health condition.
The Departmental Disability Officer is the first point of contact within a student's department. This person will apply for special exam arrangements on the student's behalf and will facilitate the student's support within the department.
