This page provides basic information for Imperial College EEE and EIE students wishing to spend their final year abroad.

For further information please contact Professor A Astolfi (Departmental Student Exchange Coordinator) or Emma Rainbow.

Information for the year abroad

The EEE Department has several bilateral agreements with international institutions.

  1. Erasmus agreements include: ENST Paris (for students specializing in Communication), Ecole PolytecniqueKTHKU LeuvenUniversity of Rome "Tor Vergata" .
  2. Agreements in the framework of the IDEA League include: RWTH AachenETH Zurich, and ParisTech.
  3. Other agreements: University of California, MIT and National University of Singapore

EEE Department students wishing to spend their final year abroad are advised to contact Professor A Astolfi and discuss their plans/ideas.

They may additionally contact the Erasmus Club for students' information about going abroad and visit the UK Socrates-Erasmus Council Website.

To familiarize yourself with the universities and to help with your selection, visit the universities webpages. Note that, with a few exceptions (ETH-Zurich, KTH), lectures are given in the language of the country were the institution in based. You should therefore make sure that you have a good understanding of the relevant foreign language. You could take evening classes in the Language Centre. The Language Centre can also advise on whether you can reach an appropriate level by your fourth year, when you will study abroad.

Collect  Placements Abroad Handbook (also available on this page) from the Student Placement Office and contact Adrian Hawksworth for non-academic matters relating to your stay abroad. Note that the Student Placement Office organises a Study Abroad Information Session in February each year.

If you have not obtained at least 55% in your second year, you cannot go abroad, and will have to change your registration to another stream.

Places in overseas institutions are limited. The Department will ultimately decide on suitable candidates for the Year Abroad Programme. We understand that this may cause disappointment, but the Department acts in your best interests. No formal decision will be taken without discussion with you.

The final decision as to whether to spend the year abroad does not have to be made until the Autumn term of your 3rd year.  You should ensure that you are registered on the Year Abroad stream.  During the 3rd year EEE students follow the MEng (Technical) programme, and EIE students follow the MEng programme.

Contact Adrian Hawksworth for information about the financial contribution the College will make. Fees for Home students in a one full year Erasmus exchange can be waived.

In the Spring Term of your Third Year you should contact your host institution for an application form. Please complete it, get my signature and send it to the host institution. The deadlines for submission of the application vary according with institution.

Attend the language course organized by your host university before the academic year starts.

By early October, email Professor A Astolfi (cc. Emma Rainbow) your choice of courses. You need the Department's agreement for your choice.

During your Year Abroad you have to obtain a total of 70 ECTS credits divided as follows.

The 70 ECTS credits have to be obtained from the Dissertation (10 ECTS), the FYP (each institution attaches an ECTS value to this so this will vary); Exams (ECTS values for exams vary significantly across institutions and may range from 2 ECTS to 12 ECTS per exam). Please speak to Professor A Astolfi for clarification.

The overall Year 4 mark will be computed using the ECTS values as weights, e.g. the dissertation is worth 1/7 of the Year Abroad mark.

Dissertation

The dissertation an essay of approximately 20 pages (12pt, double spacing) including title, references, etc. (sample dissertation).

The essay should be on a subject of interest to engineers, and have a component relating to the host country. It could for example describe a sector of industry, compare host country and the UK, and discuss its impact on society. Or it could describe a piece of research, and its impact on the industry in the host country and the UK. The style to use is that of essays in Science (the journal), American Scientist, Le Monde or Die Zeit. Prof Astolfi marks the dissertation

Project

The project is marked by a member of staff of our department, and second marked by Prof Astolfi. This second marking takes into account information we receive from your project supervisor abroad. The title and broad subject of your project should be approved by Prof Astolfi. Please make arrangement to start your project as soon as possible.

Please be in touch (by email, phone if needed, and whenever you are back in London). If you encounter any serious problem let us know as soon as possible. Additionally, you may always contact Professor Kristel Fobelets (Senior Tutor), Professor Christos Bouganis  (Director of Undergraduate Studies) and Emma Rainbow  (UG Admissions Administrator). If needed, we arrange a visit at your host institution to check your progress and discuss any problem.

Finally, please note that, while abroad if you have any doubt or problem it is always best, and wise, to let us know.
