Pollution

We reveal the properties and behaviour of environmental contamination, including flows of air, water and plastic pollution
We model energy and environmental systems using cutting-edge experimental, imaging and computational techniques. Our research supports sustainable geoscience technologies for future generations, and characterises how pollution flows through natural and urban environments.
We use detailed flow models to predict pollutant dispersal via air and water (including wastewater), and study the associated risks and possibilities for sustainable and innovative routes forward. We have particular expertise in radioactive substances, heavy metals and persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic organic chemicals that occur naturally in the environment, such as lead and arsenic.
Through our research, we work to reduce the environmental impact of mining and energy production, exploring concepts such as nuclear safety and waste storage, carbon reduction and bio-storage, and environmental geochemistry.
