Dr Claire Baker

Research
Claire is an EPSRC Doctoral Prize research fellow in Design Engineering's HEAD Lab whose area of expertise is injury biomechanics and road safety. Her research interest is in using biomechanical information to predict injury outcomes in real time, with the aim of improving emergency care response. She completed her multidisciplinary PhD, the AutoTriage project, under the umbrella of Imperial's Neurotechnology CDT. The AutoTriage project investigates the feasibility of predicting traumatic brain injury in road traffic collisions using in-vehicle sensors. Claire split her time between Imperial's Medicine and Design Engineering departments, as well as PhD industry partner TRL.

At Imperial's Dyson School, Juan’s work focuses on creating tools that enable the design of autonomy-supportive technology. This involves identifying the boundaries of responsible automated influence, classifying mental harms, and building tools that developers and designers can use to check that the systems they create support human autonomy.

Andrea Gerino

Research
Andrea’s research activity covers the area of data management with particular focus on the development and evaluation of assistive technologies. He is currently involved in the creation of virtual experiences to evaluate spatial hearing and auditory prostheses, and in the development of interactive sonic narratives for virtual heritage.

Dr Aidan Hogg

Research
Aidan's current research focuses on using deep learning to capture head-related transfer functions and, more generally, spatial acoustics and immersive audio. Jacob Tan

Yongxuan is currently a Research Assistant with the Dyson School of Design Engineering, Imperial College London, and a member of Morph Lab, Imperial College London. He is actively involved in the development of a robotic face for simulating patients of different demographic backgrounds and mechanical and virtual facial expression rendering methods.

Johan Pauwels

Johan is a Research Fellow on the SONICOM project, where he is looking at modelling individual user’s characteristics and behaviour with machine learning to enhance immersive audio. In the past, Johan contributed to multiple national and international research projects on music information retrieval in Belgium, France and the UK. He also taught subjects ranging from audio programming to big data processing at various London universities.

Research
Milan is a Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow at the Dyson School of Design Engineering. He has been dedicated to battery research since 2014, with a special focus on self-healing next-generation batteries. Milan's research expertise includes interphase engineering, post-lithium ion batteries (such as sodium-ion, room temperature sodium-sulfur, potassium-ion, potassium sulfur and lithium-sulfur batteries), flexible batteries, dry electrode fabrication, electrospinning, etc.

Ali Mohammed

Ali’s research includes the development and design of novel materials for additive manufacturing used in soilless cultivation, tissue engineering, medical implants and cancer biology. His research also includes the optimisation and design of advanced additive manufacturing techniques and technologies such as bioprinting and stereolithography.

Laura Moradbakhti

Research
Laura's research focuses on integrating the support of basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence and relatedness) in technology design processes to foster user wellbeing and technology acceptance. She works closely with industry partners to improve their current design processes. Laura is also interested in understanding how basic psychological need frustration in technology interaction can lead to mental harm. Specifically, she is working on tools that can be applied by developers to assess whether their technologies can cause mental harm, for example by hindering users’ need for autonomy.

Dr Landon Morrison

Research
Landon is a music theorist interested in the role of technological mediation in 20th- and 21st-century sonic practices, with a special focus on electronic and digital instruments in experimental, avant-garde, and popular music. His research aims to develop an interdisciplinary perspective on musical media by bringing theory into dialogue with surrounding discourses from science, technology, and cultural studies, and by combining analytical approaches with historiography, archival work, and ethnographic methods.

Shehara Perera

Research
Shehara is a research assistant in the EU-funded Natural Intelligence project. His current research focuses on designing and modelling a mountain goat inspired robotic hoof that can use its passive dynamic vibrations for slip reduction on slopes, and a bio-inspired angle-dependent damper at the knee joint for legged robots. The overarching aim is to understand how pure mechanical solutions to implement mathematical functions can simplify the real-time computational load of model-based feedback controllers for stable interactions in a natural environment.

Dr Katarina Poole

Katarina is interested in how our brain and auditory system is able to analyse our acoustic environment. She is currently working on two main projects. In one she is investigating how to create immersive audio from 3D scans of someone’s ears and head, and what aspects of the 3D scan are needed to create well perceived spatial audio. In another project Katarina is researching whether we can observe neural correlates in EEG recordings to changes in a spatial auditory scene and how these might change based on the location in space of the new auditory source.

Dr Anthony Quinn

Research
Anthony Quinn specialises in statistical signal processing and machine learning methods for optimal design amid uncertainty. He is particularly interested in the design of efficient recursive algorithms to enable distributed and sequential learning. His application foci at the Dyson are the AI-Fairness agenda, and problems of resource allocation at scale, using the optimal transport paradigm. He is tenured in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Trinity College Dublin, where he has taught for many years in probability, statistics, signal processing and telecommunications.

Marco Da Re

Research
Marco is currently conducting research on the design and development of an mHealth diagnostic system for dementia and co-morbidities in rural Peru. The system is designed to be deliverable by non-specialists and includes clinical enquiry, brief cognitive testing, functional assessment, and evaluation of co-morbidities. It is adaptable and acceptable across multiple cultural and cognitive contexts, meeting the pressing need for a diagnostic system for dementia. He has a strong interest in implementing creative and unconventional design methods, while also involving end users throughout the design process.

Dr Ravi Sikhwal

Ravi's main research project aims to design circular consumption using the latest metering technologies and adopting resource-centric design as a root approach. This project focuses at transforming the engineering of fast-moving consumer products and their interaction with home utilities by learning from consumption practices in realistic ‘living’ settings and applying the principles of the circular economy. This work takes a system-approach to the design of future fast-moving consumer products, which involves the development not only of products but also digital and physical services and infrastructure.

Dr Ting Su

Ting Su's background is in machine learning and computer science (PhD). Her expertise is in developing language models that are tailored to niche requirements, such as community clustering and fake news detection, and chatbot development for health care in dementia and asthma domain. Specifically, she has been involved in a number of projects related to researching and developing large language models for health applications, researching natural language modeling and information retrieval using machine learning and neural networks.

Fangzhou's research focuses on design for user wellbeing, participatory design and design for behaviour change. Her recent work involves exploring innovative approaches to behaviour change, drawing on her expertise in this area to develop design interventions that encourage more sustainable and healthier user behaviour and promote overall wellbeing of technology users. Through her research, Fangzhou strives to create solutions that improve people's lives while also advancing the field of responsible design.
