Origami inspired soft endoscopic capsule for visuo-haptic perception of early stage intestine tissue anomalies
Abstract
UK reports about 42,900 new bowel cancer cases every year. Our preliminary experimental results in figure 1(a) show that a soft origami inspired endoscopic capsule can use shape changes to travel both forward and backward in the intestine under peristaltic waves to collect more data compared to rigid capsules that can only go forward. In this project, we will develop the capability for direction and speed control to estimate elastic modulus of the intestine and provide haptic feedback in a physical interface that
mimics the intestine mechanical properties sensed by the capsule as shown in figure 1(b).
