Frequently asked questions
MRes Medical Device Design and Entrepreneurship FAQ
How do I apply?
An application needs to be made electronically through the College Postgraduate Admissions webpage, where you will find all the necessary information and instructions to apply. After a first eligibility assessment done by the central admissions team, an application is sent to the department. Once this has happened, Professor Moore assesses the applications and helps match successful applicants with an appropriate project and supervisor.
We suggest that applicants visit our research pages before applying so you are aware of the type of work carried out in the department. If you have a particular area of interest within Bioengineering it is useful to outline this in your statement of purpose so that we can match you with an appropriate project.
There is NO application fee for MRes programmes for 22/23 entry.
Are there any funding opportunities for which I can apply?
The Department of Bioengineering offers a limited number of £5,000 bursaries to outstanding applicants. Every applicant is automatically considered based on academic merit and prospect.
Furthermore, residents under 30 years of age may apply for the governmental postgraduate loan scheme. Please also see the central Fees and Funding webpage for further details and updates on the scheme. You may also find the College’s Scholarship Search Tool helpful.
What type of projects are available?
Project ideas usually form between April and August. Ideally, the applicant's eligibility and suitability should have been assessed by then, so applying early is advisable (see first FAQ on 'How to apply'). Below is a list of previous projects:
- Parkinson’s diagnosis device
- Catheter-based AV fistula
- Lymph node implant
- Wound care patch for diabetic ulcers
- Stroke rehabilitation robot
- Arthritis rehabilitation robot
Since there is a lot of diversity, we suggest you have a look through the academic staff research pages and let us know in your supporting statement which areas and academics interest you most. Course director Professor Jimmy Moore uses this information to allocate the projects.
What is the deadline for applications? Can I opt to study part-time?
Applications for this course will be considered in two rounds with separate deadlines:
- 1 March 2022. If you submit your application by this deadline, you can expect a decision by mid-April.
- 5 July 2022. All applications received after Round 1 are reviewed on a rolling basis up until this second and final deadline.
We advise applicants to apply early as the limited number of places might be allocated before the deadlines are reached.
The start date is always October, which is the start of the Autumn term. We offer the course on a full-time basis only.
I have filled in my application. Do I need to send the two reference letters with it?
No. The Admissions Office will contact your two nominated referees electronically. They will send their letters to the College independently.
What starting date must I put on the application form?
The course starts in early October each year, and finishes in late September of the following year. The exact dates vary from year to year. For the purposes of filling in the online application form, you can simply enter the desired admission date as the 1st October of the year in which you are applying to enter. The Admissions Office will put in the actual session date.
I am a student from outside the UK. How can I find out if my degree meets the entry requirements for the MRes course?
Broadly, we require a degree in engineering, a physical science or life science at a level equivalent to a UK First Class or Upper Second Class Honours degree. For life science graduates, we also require a reasonable standard of mathematical ability. However, there is wide variation between universities and so several different criteria are applied by the College. Therefore the only sure way to determine your eligibility is to submit your online application form, with your degree transcript if available.
That said, the College do provide general information on degree equivalence, which you may find helpful.
I have got my degree but I still need to take an English Language test (IELTS or TOEFL). Can I send in my application before I take the test?
Yes. Do not delay sending in your application, since the evaluation process can begin while we are waiting for your English Language test result. Please note, you will need to send the original, not a copy, of your test certificate to Engineering Admissions before a final decision on your application can be made and sent to you.
MRes + PhD Programmes (1+3 Degrees)
Any of our MRes programmes (MRes Bioengineering or MRes Medical Device Design) can form the first year of effectively a 4 year PhD (1 year MRes + 3 year Phd), but you have to apply for each programme separately. The application is done through Imperial’s central service. Admissions on the MRes does not necessarily mean admissions to the PhD programme.
For the MRes Medical Device Design and Entrepreneurship, you should identify a potential supervisor beforehand by having a look at the research areas of the staff in Bioengineering and then approaching them to discuss potential projects. Alternatively, mentioning potential supervisors in the statement of purpose when applying helps the programme director find and match suitable projects, considering the applicant's background, interest and qualification.
All of this, of course, requires that Imperial's entry criteria are met.
If you are interested in following the MRes with a PhD, you will need to make the PhD application at the end of your first term (recommended) and no later than the summer before the new academic year.
Are there any tips to ensure that my application is successful?
Every application is carefully considered on its merits. To maximise your chances of success, you should ensure that you do the following:
- Sign and date the declaration.
- Supply a clear and concise Personal Statement in the space provided. Consider your aptitude and motivation for applying for the course, your academic and/or career plans as well as your research interests. Explain why the Department of Bioengineering/Imperial College London would help you achieve your research/career goals.
- Include clear indication of what research area and potential supervisor you are interested in.
- Include your email address (the electronic form has a space for it).
- Include the email addresses of your two referees.
- Complete the section that details how your studies will be financially supported.
