Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How do I apply?
Please apply online via the MRes Bioengineering page.
There is NO application fee for MRes programmes for 22/23 entry.
What is the application deadline?
Applications for this course will be considered in two rounds with separate deadlines:
- 1 March 2022. If you submit your application by this deadline, you can expect a decision by mid-April.
- 5 July 2022. All applications received after Round 1 are reviewed on a rolling basis up until this second and final deadline.
We advise applicants to apply early as the limited number of places might be allocated before the deadlines are reached.
The start date is always October, which is the start of the Autumn term. We offer the course on a full-time basis only.
What type of research projects will I be able to select?
In the first year of the programme, we had over four times more research projects than students and every student was offered their first choice. Some example of potential projects included: “Development of tumour-on-chip platforms for investigating lung metastasis through extracellular matrix”, “Systems biology approach for cancer immunotherapy dynamical mechanisms to turn “cold” tumours into “hot” tumours”, “Tumour-selective nanoparticles for the treatment of metastatic ovarian cancer”, “A microscope that sees electricity: development of an optical imaging pipeline to evaluate cancer cell aggressiveness through electrical and morphological dynamics”, among many others.
The dynamic nature of research means that research projects may change year-to-year. However, the broad expertise of academics across Imperial College and the Institute of Cancer Research will provide broad opportunities for exciting research.
When do I choose a research project?
You will have time to discuss with potential supervisors about their projects in the first term. Project selection will typically occur based on a rank-ordered selection process in November.
Do I need to get in touch with potential supervisors before applying?
For the MRes in Cancer Technology, you are not required to contact potential supervisors before applying.
I am a student from outside the UK. How can I find out if my degree meets the entry requirements for the MRes course?
Broadly, we require a degree in engineering, physical or life science at a level equivalent to a UK First Class or Upper Second Class Honours degree. This is generally higher than the college Postgraduate minimum academic requirements. For Life Science graduates we also require a reasonable standard of mathematical ability.
If you would like to know whether your qualifications meet our minimum requirements please email be.pgadmissions@imperial.ac.uk stating your degree subject, the institution you graduated from and your final achieved or expected grade.
Applicants should note that meeting the minimum academic requirement does not guarantee you will be made an offer of admission.
I have got my degree but I still need to take an English Language test (IELTS or TOEFL). Can I send in my application before I take the test?
Yes. It is fine to send your application before you have met the English Language conditions.
If you do not hold an acceptable English Language qualification you will be asked to obtain one before your place at the college is confirmed.
Are there any funding opportunities that I can apply for?
Unfortunately, we do not offer funding for the MRes programme.
You can read more about scholarships and postgraduate loans on the Postgraduate Funding webpage.
