These programmes provide continuing professional development for Year 12 and 13 A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics teachers.
We are pleased to share with you our free Teachers’ mA*ths and Further mA*ths CPD courses created with MEI.
These exciting programmes of continuing professional development are for Year 12 and 13 A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics teachers. The courses are designed to assist teachers in gaining the knowledge and skills required to support students in achieving the top grade in their respective A Level. All courses will have a live final masterclass to support your CPD. The courses are designed to complement our student mA*ths and Further mA*ths programmes.
About the courses
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) courses in the top Russell Group universities often ask for an A* in A Level Mathematics and sometimes Further Mathematics. This may lead to the following questions:
- What is the best way to identify "A* potential" in students studying these subjects?
- What can you do to support students aiming for the top grades?
- Are there other resources for self-study and extension you could point students to?
If you're an A Level Mathematics or Further Mathematics teacher for Year 12 and/or Year 13 in a state school, particularly if some of your students are working with social disadvantage, our courses can help to answer the questions above.
Additionally, the courses complement our student MOOCs (Massive Open Online Course) which offer deeper understanding to the more advanced A Level topics for students. Here, the units of the Teachers’ CPD courses will focus on some central topics and (via videos and explanations) will explore:
- Aspects of the mathematical topics in depth,
- Pedagogical themes, illustrated in the context of the topic,
- Approaches to differentiating resources,
- Resources designed for the highest attainers,
- Mathematical ideas related to questions from the student MOOC.
We are currently running four programmes, please click on the titles for further information.
The content differs between the courses and corresponds to the applicable subject and year group. You may apply for multiple courses if you teach them and feel it would be beneficial. All courses will have a LIVE final masterclass hosted at Imperial and run with MEI (see specific course information for details).
What to expect
Year 12 mA*ths
This programme focuses on A Level Mathematics for teachers of Year 12 students. The course is self-paced and can be completed in your own time. You will have flexible access to the materials, however we recommend allowing around 7-weeks for the course.
Course units with approximate completion time*
Unit 1: Introduction - Up to 1 hour
Unit 2: Number and algebra - Up to 4 hours
Unit 3: Coordinate geometry - Up to 1 hour
Mid course review - Up to 1 hour
Unit 4: Mechanics - Up to 2 hours
Unit 5: Statistics - Up to 3 hours
*Timings are approximate and suggest the required time for a topic to be counted on a certificate of participation. Further resources are linked from each section and so participants may, if they wish, spend more time than this in consolidating and reflecting on the content.
The online course which will also feature a live closing teacher masterclass hosted at Imperial with MEI on Saturday 24 June 2023.
Year 13 mA*ths
This programme focuses on A Level Mathematics for teachers of Year 13 students. The course is self-paced and can be completed in your own time. You will have flexible access to the materials, however we recommend allowing around 7-weeks for the course.

Unit 1: Functions - Up to 1 hour
Unit 2: Sequences and series - Up to 2 hours
Unit 3: Binomial theorem - Up to 1 hour
Unit 4: Mechanics - Up to 2 hours
Unit 5: Statistics - Up to 1 hour
Unit 6: Differentiation - Up to 1 hour
Unit 7: Integration - Up to 1 hour
*Timings are approximate and suggest the required time for a topic to be counted on a certificate of participation. Further resources are linked from each section and so participants may, if they wish, spend more time than this in consolidating and reflecting on the content.
The online course which will also feature a live closing teacher masterclass hosted at Imperial with MEI on Saturday 24 June 2023.
Year 12 Further mA*ths
This programme focuses on A Level Further Mathematics for teachers of Year 13 students. The course is self-paced and can be completed in your own time. You will have flexible access to the materials, however we recommend allowing around 7-weeks for the course.

Unit 1: Introduction to Matrices - 4 hours
Unit 2: Roots of Polynomials - 4 hours
Unit 3: Modulus Argument form of Complex Numbers & Loci - 4 hours
Unit 4: Determinants and Inverses of 2 x 2 Matrices - 4 hours
Unit 5: Matrix Transformations - 4 hours
Unit 6: Mathematical Induction - 4 hours

The online course which will also feature a closing teacher conference that will be held on a Saturday in the Autumn/Spring term.

Year 13 Further mA*ths
This programme focuses on A Level Further Mathematics for teachers of Year 13 students. The course is self-paced and can be completed in your own time. You will have flexible access to the materials, however we recommend allowing around 7-weeks for the course.

Unit 1: Roots of unity – Up to 4 hours
Unit 2: Second order differential equations - Up to 4 hours
Unit 3: Vectors - Up to 4 hours
Unit 4: Simple harmonic motion - Up to 4 hours
Unit 5: Poisson distribution - Up to 4 hours
Unit 6: Chi-squared tests - Up to 4 hours

How to apply
Applications are now open for our Teacher CPD programmes. Please follow the link at the top of the page to complete the application form.
The deadline for applications is 11:00 on Wednesday 31 May 2023. However, we will be accepting applications on a rolling basis, once the maximum capacity for a course is reached we will close applications, hence please apply early to avoid disappointment.
You may apply for more than one course if you wish. If you gain a place on both a Year 12 and 13 Teachers’ CPD programme, we recommend beginning with the Year 12 course and after completion following with the Year 13 course.
Please note, we strongly encourage applications from teachers who have students already registered on our Year 12/13 mA*ths or Further mA*ths Online Programme, as well as those who do not.
The selection criteria for prioritising teachers to gain a place on the programme will consist of:
- You teach Year 12 and/or Year 13 A Level Mathematics or Further Mathematics at a state school.
- Your school has below average attainment or has a high percentage of students receiving free school meals.
- You are working with students with a high social-economic disadvantage.
- You have a student(s) from your class on the mA*ths or Further mA*ths Online Programme.
