This summer school gives you the chance to experience what it is like to study at medical school and explore medicine as a future career.

Please note that our programmes are now running in-person where possible, but some activities may take place on our dedicated online platform. Our first priority remains the safety and well-being of our staff, students and programme participants. Where programmes and events take place at an Imperial campus, participants, staff and students are encouraged to wear face-coverings indoors, especially in enclosed or crowded places, unless exempt.

Our programme coordinators will provide full information about the location and delivery method of our programmes to those enrolled.

About Medical Summer School

In partnership with the Medical Schools Council and funded by Health Education England, this summer school will provide the opportunity to experience what it is like to study at medical school and explore medicine as a future career.
 
This summer school is fully funded (free to successful applicants), which includes all course fees, materials, accommodation, three meals a day as well as any trips that are part of the summer school. Travel is not included however we may be able to offer successful applicants travelling from outside of London financial assistance for their travel.
 

What to expect

 

Students will spend three to four days learning about what it takes to become a doctor through talks, workshops and practical activities. There will be sessions on a variety of specialisms within medicine as well as support for preparing a strong application to medical school. 

Students will also have the chance to experience broader university life through a series of social activities and time to relax with other participants and undergraduate mentors.

Applicant information

Academic requirements

For this programme, you should:

  • Be studying at least eight GCSEs (or equivalent)
  • Be on track to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grades 6-9, including maths and sciences
  • Be on track to achieve a minimum of a grade 5 in GCSE English Language 
  • Expect to study science and maths subjects at A-level or International Baccalaureate (higher level) in your post-16 studies
  • Be considering studying medicine at university
  • Be on track to achieve the minimum entry requirments for medicine at university*

* The average A-level requirement to study medicine is three A grades (including two sciences) however, there are adjusted offers from BBC available on programmes at some medical schools.

Eligibility criteria

The Y11 Medical Summer School is an MSC Summer School, and part of a Medical Schools Council initiative funded by Health Education England. The Summer School aims to support students from backgrounds under-represented in higher education.  Due to the way the programme is funded, students living outside of England are not eligible for the programme.

We will prioritise applicants from these target areas:

Basingstoke and Deane, Bedford and Central Bedfordshire, Bracknell Forest, Dudley, Havering, Medway, Mendip, Nottingham, Salford, South Cambridgeshire, South Oxfordshire, South Somerset, Suffolk Coastal, Swindon, Tameside, Thanet, Wiltshire, and Windsor and Maidenhead.

To be eligible for the programme you must be studying at a state school and meet at minimum of two criteria below:

  • Be in, or have previously been in, local authority care
  • Be studying at a school that achieved below the national average attainment 8 score
  • Be studying at a school that achieved below the national average progress 8 score
  • Be studying at a school with a high percentate of students receiving free school meals
  • Be living in a geographical area with low levels of progression into higher education
  • Be a young carer
  • Be from a family where the parents/guardians do not have a university degree from the UK or abroad
  • Be in receipt, or eligible for, free school meals, the 16-19 Bursary Fund, Discretionary Learner Support, Means Tested Benefit or Pupil Premium
  • Be estranged from both parents/guardians and/or be an asylum seeker or refugee

The more of these criteria that you meet, the more likely you are to be offered a place.

Please note that this summer school is part of a national programme of summer schools supported by the Medical Schools Council. Students who have already attended an MSC summer school are not eligible to attend a second MSC summer school. Links to the other summer schools can be found on the Medical Schools Council website.
