Resitting Examinations

If you are unsuccessful in any of your exams then you will usually be allowed to resit. Your department will contact you once your results have been formally agreed to discuss your options with you and let you know when you will be able to resit your exams.

If you are an undergraduate student you may be able to resit in the September immediately following your first attempt. Alternatively, you may be asked to repeat the year, or to withdraw and resit the exams the following summer.

If you are a taught postgraduate student then you will have to resit on the next available occasion, which is usually in the following academic year.

The arrangements for resitting exams vary according to your course, so please consult the relevant Academic Regulations.

Please note that it is likely that the marks you obtain in a resit will be capped at the pass mark. Your department will be able to confirm this.

If you feel that your performance in exams is likely to be affected by illness, bereavement or another circumstance then you should make your department/division or course organiser aware of this before your exams start.

If you inform your department/division or course organiser of your circumstances after your exams, then there can be no guarantee that they will be considered.

If you are resitting your exams, you may be asked to pay a resit fee. 

The resit fees vary depending on the type of degree you are registered for.

It may be possible for you to apply to stay in College accommodation when you resit your exams.

To be eligible to apply you must ask your department to send an email to confirm that you are returning to re-take exams and supply full details.
