Erasmus+ Key Action 1 UPDATE (27 January 2023), with reference to Covid-19 and the outcomes of Brexit as the UK moves on afer the end of the transition period

  • (with the UK having withdrawn from the EU on 31 January 2020; and exited the transition period on 1 January 2021) the UK-EU Withdrawal Agreement means that the UK will remain active within the 2014-2020 Erasmus+ programme until the end of approved Erasmus projects (31 May 2023).
  • Imperial College London is active with its Erasmus+ project for student mobility in 2020-21 and 2021-22. The availability of mobility grants will be unaffected during 2020-21 and 2021-22, but will no longer be available from (including) 2022-23.
  • On 24 December 2020 the UK Government announced that the UK (excluding Northern Ireland) will not participate in the new Erasmus scheme (2021-27).
  • Switzerland does not participate in the higher education mobility element of Erasmus+. For 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 there are separate mobility arrangements (SEMP: Swiss-European Mobility Programme) for study (exchange) mobility to ETH Zurich and EPF Lausanne (contact : Adrian Hawksworth ). The situation regarding SEMP (for UK univeristies) in 2023-24 is not yet known, although arrangements are in place with ETH Zurich and EPF Lausannce for the SEMP arrangements to continue in 2023-24 should the UK continue to be included in SEMP.
  • The question for throughout this whole period is not whether a study or work placement can take place abroad because the College will continue to provide/facilitate these opportunities, but more about the programmes and funding that are available to support these opportunities.

Students may wish to take note of the following:

  • Undergraduate students of Imperial College London who undertook a full academic year study placement in 2020-21 and 2021-22 as part of their degree ("year abroad") via the Erasmus+ Programme at an institution of higher education in an Erasmus “programme country” had the opportunity to apply for an Erasmus mobility (for study) grant. The exit of the UK from the brexit transitionary period did not impact on these grants.
  • Undergraduate and postgraduate students of Imperial College London who planned as part of their degree during 2020-21 to undertake a work placement (as a module or contributing to a module) in one of the current Erasmus+ programme countries were able to apply for a mobility (for a traineeship) grant from the Erasmus+ scheme regardless of the UK exited the brexit transitionary period before their planned placement start date. The exit of the UK from the brexit transitionary period did not impact on these grants. However, in 2021-22 these grants were not available except for a small number of undergraduate year in industry students.
  • For mobility in 2022-23 and beyond the UK Government's Turing Scheme will provide a source of financial support for students purusing global mobility opportunities. Please read further news about the Turing Scheme.
