All workshops will be available to book from 10 December 2022, prior to the beginning of Spring term.

Getting Started workshops provide an in-depth, hands-on introduction to select reference management software packages. 

These workshops are two hours long and will help you get started using these tools for your academic work and research. 

Booking is required.  Getting Started workshops in the academic year 22-23 will be delivered in two modes: at Abdus Salam Library on the South Kensington campus and online via Microsoft Teams. Getting Started workshops

An introduction to EndNote, a software package that allows you to manage all the references you need for your papers, reports, essays or theses by enabling you to keep them in your own personal database or library. In addition, you can use it to insert citations into your documents. EndNote is compatible with Windows and Mac. 

By the end of this session you will be able to: 

  • understandhow to import references from various sources including: Library search, research database and google scholar. 
  • practice how to search databases within EndNote to import references.  
  • use EndNote to manage your library of references effectively and to use folder functions. 
  • organise your library of references within EndNote and be able to search within your references. 
  • use EndNote to insert citations, figures and tables and generate a bibliography in Microsoft Word.

An introduction to LaTeX, a document preparation system widely used for scientific documents. 

By the end of the session, participants will be able to create and edit LaTeX documents, using Overleaf, a web-based LaTeX editor. By the end of this session you will be able to: 

  • create a LaTeX document using Overleaf  
  • create simple lists, tables, figures and equations with LaTeX commands  
  • discover templates & packages for starting a new project using Overleaf 
  • expand the templates with basic formatting commands  
  • identify how to troubleshoot or fix common coding problems
