Speed dial and abbreviated dials

Speed dial is a function on some Imperial College London telephones that you to enter a telephone number into its memory and dial it with the push of a single button.

Abbreviated dials are a telephone service that allows you to store your frequently called numbers. Abbreviated dials differ from speed dial because your frequently called numbers are stored in a list and are each assigned a two-digit code (from 01 to 99).

How do I set up and use speed dial?

  1. Go to the Telephony Self Service webpage.
  2. Click on SpeedDials. This will display your configured speed dials.
  3. Click on Edit SpeedDials.
  4. Select the position where you would like to add the telephone number (from 01-03 for Cisco model 6941, from 01-11 for Cisco model 6961, 01 for Cisco model 7945, from 01-04 for Cisco model 7965 and from 01-06 for Cisco model 7975).
  5. Enter the telephone extension or full telephone number (including 9 or 7 at the beginning depending on whether it is a business or personal number).
  6. Enter an identifying label such as the person's name or 'Home'.
  7. Click Make Changes.
  8. Repeat the above steps until you have entered all of the speed dials you want.
  9. Click Apply.
  10. Click Yes to confirm the changes.

The system will send an update to your telephone before returning to the screen showing your configured speed dials. Your handset will reload.

  1. Dial the number that you assigned the telephone number to.
  2. For speed dials, simply pick up the receiver. For abbreviated dials, press the AbbrDial or SpeedDial softkey on your Cisco telephone (usually the third key from the left underneath the display screen).

Note: The number of abbreviated dials that can be accessed by pressing the up/down arrows above the keypad while the receiver is on the hook is limited by the telephone model. For Cisco models 7906 and 7911 you can view the first four, for model 6941 the first six and for model 6961 you can view the first sixteen.

Caller ID

By default, all calls to external recipients from College telephones are presented as 'Withheld'. This can cause problems when telephoning individuals and organisations who do not accept calls from withheld numbers.

You can change the Calling Line Identifier, commonly referred to as Caller ID. The options available for Caller ID are as follows:

  • Actual CLI - Present your full College telephone number, which enables the recipient to identify you by your number or call you back directly if your call is missed.
  • Generic College CLI - Present a generic College telephone number (+44 (0)207 594 5555) that does not identify you personally. If your call is missed and the recipient calls this number back, the recipient will hear a message saying that he or she was called by somebody at Imperial College London.
  • Withheld CLI - Continue to present your external calls as 'Withheld'. This is the default setting, so you will not need to change it.

If you choose to select the Actual CLI or the Generic College CLI, you can still withhold your Caller ID on a call-by-call basis by dialling 141 before dialling 9 for an outside line.

Instructions for changing your Caller ID

To change your Caller ID, follow these steps:

Notes

  • You can only change the Caller ID of a telephone registered to you.
  • You cannot make changes on shared telephones.
  • Changing your Caller ID only applies to external calls. The change will not affect your number presentation on internal calls.
