FAQs
January 2020 has now passed and I am still using Windows 7, what happens next?
The project team has been working to update staff computers to Windows 10 and have had a good deal of success, however, there are still approximately 2500 staff computers using Windows 7.
Being out of support presents a risk as staff will no longer receive essential security updates from Microsoft, therefore ICT has purchased extended support for Windows 7. This ensures staff computers remain supported and gives the project team more time to get the rest of the College onto Windows 10 before January 2023.
The new licenses will automatically be applied to College managed computers. If you believe that your computer isn’t managed by ICT and is still running Windows 7, then please get in touch by contacting the ICT Service Desk so that we can discuss your options.
How to check if I have a College managed computer?
The Windows 7 extension will be automatically applied through the Software Center App. To check if the device is managed by the College please type “Software Center” into the “Start Menu” and click the icon. If the application successfully opens your computer is managed.
How do I reinstall my software after updating to Windows 10?
The Windows 10 project team encourage you to discuss software requirements with a Windows 10 engineer prior to upgrading your computer. During the upgrade, your software will be removed from your computer and will have to be reinstalled. The exact method that you use for reinstallation will depend on what software you have and the license.
Some software will be available for download from the Software Centre or the Software Hub. If you have paid for software then please contact the Windows 10 project team or the ICT Service Desk and they can discuss in detail what options you have.
Please note that in some cases you may be required to buy new software. This is because your original software has a one-time license key or may have been inherited from a previous user.
