Gender pay gap in bonuses
There are a small number of bonus payments (known as one-off payments) at Imperial – only 5.3% of staff receive a bonus, and this is evenly split between men and women. Our bonus gap is due to the fact that we have fewer women in senior positions, and bonus payments are proportionate to individuals’ salaries. The College issues guidance on the criteria for awarding bonus payments and the amounts that should be awarded for each grade.
The College employs Clinical Academic staff who are employed on NHS National terms and conditions. Some Clinical Academics receive Excellence Awards, which are not under the College’s control or funded by the College. These are in effect bonus payments awarded by the Department of Health & Social Care to senior Clinical Academics based on their clinical and academic contribution.
Although Imperial does not decide these bonuses, they affect the bonus pay gap at the College due to a higher proportion of senior Clinical Academic staff being male. Therefore, Clinical Excellence Awards have been analysed separately.
