"I have been fortunate enough to have been supported by many wonderful men and women over the years. The best pieces of advice I received were: "Never give up your passion, even when you are blinded by exhaustion (husband)"; "Read widely, especially outside your field to garner inspiration (female mentor)", "Stop fearing authority figures so much! (Male academic sponsor)" and "Learn how to say NO (best friend)".

"I fell in love with research as a junior doctor and have never stopped striving to follow my dream of a career as a clinical academic. I have found the greatest challenge to deal with is "mum guilt" and the mental load of juggling medical practice, research (in a cynical and competitive environment at times) and parenting. Sometimes accepting what you do is "good enough" is OK. Sometimes you need to strive for only the best. Women shouldn't fear being openly ambitious. It doesn't always go down well but that, and learning to control the devil of imposter syndrome, will carry you."
