Engineering Technical Assistant, Estates Operations

"I started my career at Imperial College in September 2016, working as an Apprentice Maintenance Engineer within the Estates Operations maintenance teams. Individual teams are responsible for specific sections of the College estate and by spending time with each of these teams, I have been able to gain a broad experience of the many different systems that are required to be kept operational in order to support the College’s world leading teaching and research.

"As well as acquiring valuable technical knowledge and skills, I have been encouraged to talk to people in the course of undertaking my work and this has helped me to develop and build confidence in my communication skills.

"One of the many things that impressed me during my time with the maintenance teams was the level of mutual support and the positive approach in dealing with all challenges. I am now keen to build on this experience in my new role as Engineering Technical Assistant within the Estates Operations Engineering Team. The core role of the team is to develop and monitor the engineering standards and strategies for College projects and presents an exciting new challenge for me.

"The advice I would give to other young people is to appreciate what you already have and how far you have come, and to try make the most of all opportunities presented. Remember that there’s no need to rush, life isn’t a race. I believe that what’s meant to be will be. Work hard and the results will follow."
