This short course is one of the elective modules on the MSc Cardiovascular and Respiratory Healthcare programme.

Course aims

At the end of this module students will be able to:

  • Appraise current political and societal influences on the delivery of quality cardiovascular and respiratory healthcare
  • Explain and communicate the value of incorporating the 3 key pillars of a high quality healthcare service (safety, effectiveness and patient experience) into the development and delivery of innovative clinical practice and e-health
  • Understand state-of-the art technology related to e-health and be familiar with key applications for these technologies
  • Critically evaluate the importance of big-data on service redesign
  • Discuss the importance of incorporating a person-centred approach into the development of innovative health care such as e-health

More information

During this module students will learn how data on safety, effectiveness and the patient experience contributes to the development and delivery of quality healthcare services and e-health.

  • The module will comprehensively cover the current political and social influences on cardiovascular and respiratory healthcare typically including a review of changing global aetiology of common cardiac and respiratory disease, key metrics for quality healthcare and the need for innovation and improvement
  • Students will be introduced to key concepts in transformational leadership
  • In addition patient empowerment and activation will be covered typically including shared decision-making, measures for patient experience and stakeholder engagement in shaping healthcare delivery
  • Students will be introduced to new technologies around e-health such as patient held devices, fitness and well-being technologies, remote monitoring. Their impact on the delivery of quality healthcare from a patient perspective and key issues in the adoption of new technologies will be covered.
  • Students will also learn about large data-bases and how these inform service redesign.
  • Key research related to quality healthcare provision will be reviewed
  • Students will be exposed to basic concepts related to health economics

Students have the option of completing the assessment component. Participants who have completed the assessment will be provided with an official Imperial College London transcript. 

Please note that participants who later enrol in one of the departments postgraduate programmes in Cardiovascular and Respiratory Healthcare will be subject to the full tuition fee. Participants are however able to transfer a limited amount of CPD credits already gained within the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Healthcare programme, subject to meeting APEL regulations and only if the short course has been fully assessed.  Marks/credits for assessed work are not available for students for considerable time after the work has been submitted, as all marks have to be Board approved.  

Should a participant wish to sit one or more of the assessments, registration must be made and payment received, before the start of the course module at the point of booking.
