This short course is one of the elective modules on the MSc Cardiovascular and Respiratory Healthcare programme.

Course aims

At the end of this module students will be able to:

  • Appraise key concepts in respiratory or ventilation failure (acute and chronic) and understand the influence of common pathophysiological changes resulting from disease
  • Understand the state-of-the-art knowledge related to the control of breathing during wake and sleep, analyse and interpret sleep studies, identify and differentiate sleep disordered breathing (obstructive and central sleep apnoea) and nocturnal hypoventilation
  • Perform NIV set up, appropriate monitoring and therapy adjustments for acute and chronic respiratory failure patients and demonstrate awareness of common troubleshooting mechanisms
  • Understand contemporary airway management strategies and key applications for these techniques
  • Critically appraise the different methods for weaning from ventilatory support
  • Perform NIV set up, appropriate monitoring and therapy adjustments for acute and chronic respiratory failure patients and demonstrate awareness of common troubleshooting mechanisms.
  • Discuss the importance of individualised patient management plans for complex respiratory failure patients that cover the entire patient journey

More information

During this module students will learn about the respiratory support mechanisms available to diagnose and treat patients with respiratory or ventilatory failure and sleep disordered breathing.

  • The module will provide an overview of the current knowledge of respiratory failure and the pathophysiology of the common diseases leading to respiratory failure
  • Students will also learn about the mechanisms of sleep and sleep disordered breathing. This will include the diagnosis and will review the evidence behind contemporary management of sleep disordered breathing
  • The module will comprehensively cover the technologies used for respiratory support, typically including CPAP, NIV and ASV, the rational for their use and the ongoing monitoring and troubleshooting required
  • Techniques for airway clearance (humidification, cough assessment, cough augmentation) will be covered
  • Students will be introduced to the management of tracheotomies and learn methods of weaning patients from invasive ventilator therapy
  • Students will be exposed to basic concepts related to setting up a respiratory support service.

Students have the option of completing the assessment component. Participants who have completed the assessment will be provided with an official Imperial College London transcript.

Please note that participants who later enrol in one of the departments postgraduate programmes in Cardiovascular and Respiratory Healthcare will be subject to the full tuition fee. Participants are however able to transfer a limited amount of CPD credits already gained within the Cardiovascular and Respiratory Healthcare programme, subject to meeting APEL regulations and only if the short course has been fully assessed.  Marks/credits for assessed work are not available for students for considerable time after the work has been submitted, as all marks have to be Board approved.

Should a participant wish to sit one or more of the assessments, registration must be made and payment received, before the start of the course module at the point of booking.
