Covid Diaries
A new collection of of writing by Science Communication students
These pieces, all of them striking in differing ways, were provoked by a single event, the closure of Imperial College on Friday March 13th, 2020.

Films
Both the MSc Science Media Production students and the MSc Science Communication students have a chance to make short films. Over the summer, the Science Media Production students go on to make a longer film on a topic of their choice. Here are some examples of these final films:
Seasick
A film by Aliyah Kovner and Patrick Kennedy about an unexplained wasting disease afflicting starfish along the North American coast.
Fragmented
A film by Ellie MacKay exploring the impact on wildlife of leaving fragments of rain forest untouched within Borneo's palm oil plantations.
RED ZONES
A film by Alberto Allica and Federico Barni about the people of Naples, living and working in the shadow of an active volcano.
The Gift
A film by Valentin Meneveau, Sadie Straker and Noel Heaney about the centrality of religion for people living on the Faroe Islands.
The Last Luzzu
A film by Eva Spielvogel and Frank Jordan about the impact of globalization on the fishing communities of Malta.
Man on Mount Kenya
A film by Cecilia Vargas and Rosie Woodcock about the rangers who try to protect Mount Kenya from poaching and illegal logging.
Radio
As well as making films, MSc Science Media Production students and the MSc Science Communication students also have a chance to make radio programmes. Here are some examples of their radio pieces:
Radio Piece 1
Heart Patches by Tanya Hughes
Cultured Meat by Katy Pallister
Dog Bites by Hilary Guite
Group Projects
In the spring term, MSc Science Communication students embark on a creative project that reflects on the nature of science and the relationship between science and society. The final pieces take a wide range of forms. Here are a few examples:
Anatomy of the Scientist
Hidden Science
A jigsaw puzzle created by Alana Cullen, Ariana Loehr and Genevieve Zane exploring the role of lay expertise in science. The puzzle depicts the story of Harry Brower Senior and a group of Iñupiaq hunters who contributed to the development of bowhead whale research, but it is unconventional in having double-sided pieces. Only by using some pieces ‘upside down’ does the complete picture emerge, illustrating the way in which dialogue with non-scientists can contribute to the construction of scientific knowledge. Hidden Science
The Scientist
Inspired by the hit silent film, The Artist, this short film by Juan Casasbuenas, Harriet Jarlett and others explores a fictional scientist's response to the world of public engagement. Music from The Artist soundtrack, with kind permission of La Petite Reine.
Into this World
A stop motion animation by Lauren Hoskin, Ellie Pinney and Anouchka Jacquier, taking baby sea turtles’ journey to the sea as a metaphor for scientific research making its way to the public.
